Even using hardware cloth all over, if it's not securely fastened along the edges it can be breached.

It's small mesh deters entry of all small animals and reach thrus by wily coons,
but if a stronger animal gets a tooth or nail under an edge HC can be torn.

A lot of people don't realize when you remove one predator there is always another to take its place.
Like you Ron I built my coop/run to be predator proof. I also use electric poultry net as perimeter defense.

My neighbor has caught two tom bobcats this winter on only 35 acres, and I came up a little short by only catching two bobcat toes. Removing predators extends the food supply for the remaining varmints and thus the remaining predators have a better and more plentiful food supply, taking some of the predation pressure off of your chicken flock. Anything else is just wishful thinking a.k.a. whistling past the grave yard.

Thanks for posting this question as I was pondering the same thing. I live in Florida so one of my major concerns is snakes. What is the best way to keep snakes out of a run?

Also, Mtn Laurel and ChickensAreSweet, do you have any pictures of the "apron" you are referring to? I am having trouble visualizing this from description. Sorry I'm new to the coop design/construction world.

1/2" hardware cloth will keep snakes out...and pretty much any other small predator.

Here's graphic for the apron.....corner mesh pieces are out of scale, but don't forget the corners.

Don't use this kind of stapler http://m.homedepot.com/p/Arrow-Fastener-5-in-T50-Heavy-Duty-Staple-Gun-T50/100021099 use real fence staples, http://m.tractorsupply.com/en/store/searchterm/fence staples drive in at various different angles to prevent pulling out!!! (Somebody on here used some kind of "power stapler" - not sure what it was)

Or use screws and washers, or a strip of wood and screws!
