Hi BYC--

Last Friday I lost my only two laying hens to the neighbor's dog. I was not home at the time, but my boyfriend ran out when he heard a commotion to see my Ameraucana hen being carried by the neck down the street by a black lab. Strangely my Australorp disappeared without a trace...or perhaps he got to her before. My boyfriend said it sounded like there may have been more than one dog so perhaps they shared a similar fate. I am not sure if the dogs or the chicken jumped the fence...but either way I need to make my yard more secure keeping in mind that I am renting this house. Does anyone have ideas for keeping the yard secure, specifically the fence in this area? Here is a picture of the front yard...there are high fences all around the perimeter of the property and at back of the driveway, except for this spot. (I like to free range my chickens but I am now re-thinking this due to the pain I feel thinking about the suffering they endured and the regrets of not keeping them safe!) I am thinking about putting stakes in the ground and attaching welded wire fence 6' high, and maybe some electric wire at the top?

Yes electric fence will be most effective but you can, and should, address the dog issue. The incident should be reported to authorities either animal control or the sheriff's dept. If these dogs have owners they are liable and these dogs should not be roaming where they don't belong.
