Hi, everyone! I’d love any advice on a sick hen in my flock!

She started being lethargic yesterday and her poop was a deep green with some white. She roosted for a while in the chicken run, and when the other girls started picking on her, I separated her into a large dog crate outside the run. In the crate, I gave her some oatmeal and corn and crushed up grapes, and she did great eating the corn and some of the oats, as well as a few of the seed treats I mixed in with a plate of regular chicken food for her.

She sat on the crate bottom/ground rather than the roost bar I added for her, and she looked so tired (poor thing! 🥺). She kept falling asleep but waking herself up when her head would droop. In the evening I tried putting her back in the coop a bit early so she could put herself to bed, and instead she came back out, super wobbly then, and the other girls pecked at her some more. 😔

I ended up holding her for a while until the other girls went to bed, and she slept the whole time—she was so tired—then I set her in the coop for bed.

Her crop felt pretty normal when I put her to bed, and she hasn’t come out of the coop yet this morning. She’s been pretty bald on top with her feathers for a while now (along with one other hen), but since everything else was pretty normal up to this point, I thought it was summer molting and maybe some pecking? (The other hen who’s a bit bald has also had a bulging crop that I’ve been concerned about, but it empties some overnight, doesn’t feel hard, and she’s still laying and being totally normal otherwise?)

I checked her vent, and it’s not blocked, but she did have a bit of poo on her bum, but nothing too extreme.

She was also laying (I think!) just the day before, so I’m hoping whatever is going on isn’t too serious yet and I can prevent it from getting worse.

(Will attach poo pics for reference as soon as I can get some!)

I’m so concerned and I’m not sure what to do! First-time chicken mom here!

How old is your chicken? Does she lay eggs? When one is acting lethargic and seems to low in pecking order and picked on, they may be kept from food and water, or having trouble to getting to them. Reproductive disorders are more common in older hens, but can still happen even before one is laying. It would be good to know if she is getting sick or just weak. Deep green poop means she may not be eating enough. I would stay away from giving oatmeal or corn. Instead give wet mushy chicken feed with a bit of scrambled egg. A chicken vitamin for a few days might be good for her. @azygous has a good article about getting a bullied chicken’s self confidence built up. I will try to locate that. Sometimes they do better for a short time in their own crate with food and water, but still being seen by the others.

She’s about a year and a half-ish? And yes, she does typically lay eggs! And that’s helpful about the mushy chicken feed and scrambled eggs!! I gave her some mushy feed just now and she was working on it, and I’ll add some scrambled egg too! She seems to be just weak, not sick, from what I can tell so far? She finally got herself out of the coop this morning and was sitting by herself in the run (like she did yesterday). She let me pick her up and move her to the crate, so hopefully she can rest a bit today! Will try the egg and try to get some vitamins today and post any progress on this thread!

Thanks so so much for your thoughts, @Eggcessive! I really appreciate you!!

Update: she nibbled at some scrambled eggs! Not as enthusiastically as if she were well (she LOVES snacks!), but at least she’s eating!

That is good that she is eating. Some chickens who are either syptarting to molt or who are being kept from food or water may be weak. Let us know how she is getting along with an update. Here is the article on how to rehabilitate bullied chickens in their own crate next to the others, if that turns out to be her problem:

Read this article! Super helpful, @Eggcessive! Thanks for sharing that!! That made me wonder: do you think I should put the dog crate that my sick hen is in inside the run with the other ladies? Right now I have it just outside the run. This article has made me strongly consider building a chicken jail attached to the run to keep everybody safe and happy!!

Another question about this situation: it looks like my hen won’t completely relax. She keeps looking like she wants to nod off, but then she catches herself and wakes up. I’m not sure whether she’s just like traumatized from being picked on and can’t relax or whether it’s another issue? Any thoughts on this, anyone?
