: Trigg Co. Mother 'Played Dead' To Escape Attack
Man Facing Murder Charges For Deaths Of 3 Children

POSTED: 12:58 pm EST November 15, 2008
UPDATED: 1:36 pm EST November 15, 2008

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- A western Kentucky mother whose three children were killed in an attack at their home told police she "played dead" after being raped and stabbed by the assailant.

A judge unsealed court records on Friday that included the police account of the gruesome attack last month in Trigg County near Fort Campbell.

The mother said she pretended to be dead in hopes the assailant would leave and that a fire prompted her to run out the back door, where she fell into the pool.

Police found a broken knife in her neck.

Her three children, ages 5, 14 and 17, were found stabbed to death after the fire.

Kevin Dunlap, of Hopkinsville, faces three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, rape, kidnapping and other charges in the case.

I am so sorry to hear this devastating news. I am praying for the family. Unfortunately, I have had the terrible experience of recovering from the abduction and brutal murder of a beloved family member. God was my one and only solace.

An aside: was this man just wearing a DirectTV shirt, or was he an actual employee? The reason I ask is we recently had a new flat screen TV installed and had to have 2 guys from the Geek Squad/Best Buy out one day, followed a day later by a DirectTV guy. I had terrible experiences with both and realized that while I'm SURE the majority of these workers are honest ones, there is an element that obtain these jobs to have access to people's houses for bad reasons. That's why I'm mentioning it to you all; it really opened my eyes to people getting more desperate in these bad economic times and stealing more (or worse).

One of these Geek Squad guys snuck back into my master bathroom that was closed off (we realized that evening that he had stolen lots of my husband's prescription drugs), & the DirectTV guy had my husband's tools in his pocket and tried relentlessly to get me to pay him money at the end (was prepaid). He also tried to scare me indirectly by telling me he had a previous felony against him & that's why the DirectTV people where checking on him via phone 1) when he entered the house, and 2) when he left. They even spoke to me at the end and asked me questions from a check list, one of which was: if he was trying to get extra money out of me. I was alone in the house with him, with him standing right there burning holes into me with his eyes while I was on the phone. (!) I was severely intimidated and didn't answer truthfully although I called them back when he left.

Two weeks later, I woke up in a cold sweat at 3 a.m. from a VERY realistic dream about 2 guys who worked a scam where they did work in a house and left a window unlocked to return later; mostly for the women. It troubled me so much that I started checking the windows in the wee hours. The last one I checked? Right beside the new TV in our den? Unlocked and slightly pushed down where you wouldn't notice it. We never open our windows and I had just checked them all a week or so prior to those men entering my house.

Moral of the story: be even more careful than normal as to who you let in your house. Arrange for someone to be with you; spouse/friend/relative/or neighbor. Sorry to go on about this, but I believe in raising awareness of such things and the only way to do that is by sharing. Back to the original post: I will be praying and my heart goes out to the family.

OMG how gruesome. I don't know if I would want to live knowing my kids were murdered like that by some creep.

Henspa: Good points. Be safe everyone. (Also sending good thoughts to those people)

The man was an employee of Direct TV. It is so so sad.

I am so sad and angry to hear this awful story. Prayers for the family and others affected by it.

While we were in China a man molested a little girl and the community tore him to shreds before the police could get him to the station. I sometimes think our justice system has led to too much protection of violent criminals.

Direct-TV related -- a man approached our new son-in-law in a parking lot recently, saying he was a "Direct TV installer" and was in town temporarily selling and installing packages. He had on a Direct-TV T-shirt, and had a card with "Direct-TV", a name and a cell-phone number.

He got our SIL to give him their home address by promising 3 free months of Direct-TV!!

The next day the guy showed up at our daughter's house and tried to get inside. She was there alone. She said he was asking questions like what is your yearly income, what hours are you at home, how many children live in the home - all in the guise of gathering information about how many televisions they had in the house and what their cable needs were.

She said she was really spooked, and asked him to come back when her husband was home several times.

Finally she grabbed her cell phone, stepped out of the house and locked the door and began walking to her car while he continued to ask her to let him in to inspect their cable setup. He said the special offer was "today only", trying to convince her to let him in.

She ended up getting into her car and driving away to get away from him.

She found out later that the very next night their neighbor across the street was sitting outside on the deck smoking at 3 a.m. She said she saw a man walk through their alley four or five times, pausing at the shed in their backyard each time for a few minutes. On his last trip around she coughed and he took off running very fast.

I told our daughter next time a guy she does not know even looks like he's is approaching her door, slam the door and lock it, and check all the other entrances. Do not stand there talking to him or go outside! I've told her this so many times, but it seems like she forgets when she's in a dangerous situation!

They ended up reporting all this to the police.

This is indeed a terrible story. I recall this being posted at a different forum a little while ago.

We must take measures to protect ourselves at all times. There is a lot of evil and hate in the world.
