I have just opened a new store in Huntington, New York (on Long Island) all about self reliance and sustainability. Backyard chickens (beekeeping, composting, organic and heirloom seeds, hydroponics etc) are going to be a major emphasis but I am really new to all of this (my chickens and coop arrive this month) and on a limited "store just opening" budget I don't want to make expensive mistakes in stocking things people don't want or need. I have already purchased one or two of several generic items like books, waterers, grit, feeders, mash, oyster shells, brooding lamp but beyond this I need to add more stock.
As experienced owners I am hoping your vast knowledge can put me on the right track while I come up to speed in my own knowledge. First and foremost I am looking for recommendations about favored brands of feeds, and secondarily, bedding materials feeders, waterers, grit, calcium sources, DE, etc. My local owners are all limited to a maximum of 8 girls (no boys) due to local ordinance so I wouldn't stock anything relating to a larger flock.
If you were to open your own urban farm store...what essentials would you be sure to stock first and foremost...and then what "luxuries" would you add down the road? What items do you wish were always available but nearer to where you live (the nearest agway is 12 miles - 30 minutes in local traffic - so my store location offers geographic convenience)
Appreciate all the wisdom and advice you can share - as I run off to the local agway to get a few bags of feed in the meantime
Thanks
