Seemingly healthy hens mysteriously dying

NO! Lice is NOT normal for them. Wear gloves and inspect their skin for lice and mites. I’ll bet that’s your cause of death. Dust baths are a must especially when free ranging!
They are crazy dust bathers. They're constantly in the dirt ruffling their feathers. I've only noticed the lice on two of my roosters, but I'll inspect the rest, I have a powder I've used on them to get rid of the lice. Is there anyway to treat the entire flock without doing them individually?

1 year old Welsummer "Hawk" was a poor layer and always laid deformed eggs....3 year old Amber Sexlink died tonight, I figured we have have something more serious going on.
Hi @Jenaia Ward I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Unfortunately, without a necropsy or testing by your state lab http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Div...on-Animal-Disease-Diagnostic-Laboratory-BADDL there is no way to know for sure the cause of death. If you still have one or both bodies, you could send them in or perform an informal necropsy at home - looking in the abdomen, reproductive system and internal organs for an indication of internal laying, cancer or similar.

If you have a vet that can perform a fecal float on some fresh samples of poop to check for worms in your flock that would be a good idea.

Finding lice/mites on your girls - you can use a permethrin based poultry spray or dust - these can be found at most feed stores. Follow the directions on the packaging. Birds and housing would need to be treated. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1151513/pesticides-approved-for-poultry

I wouldn't set lice and mites as a cause of death. Free ranging birds will dust bath when they feel they need to, no reason to provide it for them. Chickens have an amazing defensive mechanism at hiding sickness. Often times when they do show signs of something amidst, it's to late to do anything about it. People can add really anything they want here to include myself, but its all throwing darts in the dark. Only way you will know is to have a necropsy performed by a qualified vet for avian disease or your local agricultural extension. How is your water situation when they are alone all day? Is it provided and you know they have it throughout the period when you are working? Heat stress in chickens is insanely fatal and fast.
