Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

One reason is to improve a physical quality. Considering that the lavenders are so new they could still have issues pop up where quality is concerned. I have one lavender cockeral that has an awful comb. I'm seriously considering putting him with a black female to see if that doesn't correct that problem.

Using black will help genetically while the lavender gets more established and are no longer so closely related to each other. When I bought my last pair I asked about relationships to the lavenders I already had in my coop. It made no sense for me to add more if they were already closely related.

I thank all of you . And yes Bren is very wise. Bren it must make you smile though to see how far so many have come along with yours and debs teachings about the lavender silkie . I haven't been here to learn with all of you from the start , but sure have learned a lot in the last few weeks from all of you . Thanks again for answering

Is this right , If full lav. is bred to full Lav. then blk should not be needed , some may use blk to sharpen color so to say , but shouldn't be needed ?

Some people use black if they have some Silver in the hackles. This sometimes takes the silver out of the offspring. I think, if I'm not mistaken, you can also use the black to produce offspring with darker skin, wattles and combs. I don't think it will sharpen the color. You can improve the offspring, if you do not have a good quality lavender.

Yes Darkening the skin and comb and wattles , to me is sharpening the color ,any light color with dark accent brightens or makes the lighter one stand out more , just my way of explaining what I thought it meant . So is their a set shade of lavender desired . ( light better than dark lavender or dark better then light or is some where in the middle better )? I've seen so many various shades . Although I must confess some I thought for sure they were lavender and were'nt and there have been a couple I thought wasn't and was told they were . I just want to make sure what I'm doing is correct or at least I gave it my best try anyway .
