Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Shoot me LOL!

I always wondered about her. She never looked as clear as the other lavenders but I was told she was by a reputable breeder.

Here is a pic I just ran out and took. I put her next to my Lav silkie roo from Lynette in CO. Also, if she is a splash, can I use her in a BBS pen? Could I use her blue chick in a BBS pen? Or should I just sell her and all of her babies? I have 7 eggs from this pen in the incubator so don't know what to do.

You won't necessarily be able to tell either at hatch or as month olds. Splashes look like self blues at hatch. Some splashes have a lighter ground, and others are a bit darker. It takes awhile for the splash feathering to show up, though some shows up sooner than others. The only way to be certain is to know the genetic lines or wait until they are mature.

Rilly, your nice splash girl could be used witht he blues.

Beautiful and looking good! I'm still getting one or two lavs from each hatch. Have four tinies in brooders behind me as I type, including my only lav showgirl. A few eggs are still viable in one bator--I took them from the moms that were hatching them as they were beginning to have problems. The hens are lav splits with a full lav roo. 25 developing eggs, mostly from lav x lav are nearing hatch in the other bator. I'm getting really anxious, as I have a lot of problem getting the lavs to actually hatch, and then to live! The tinies behind me are from 1 month to two days old. Lost two or three other lavs from these hatches.

That lav mortality thing is really strange! One of my Lav girls was sitting on a clutch of 12 lav/lav eggs and only three of them hatched, and one died shortly after hatching. My gray who I bred with my lav rooster had 14 chicks, only one mortality shortly after hatch. That's just too weird. Stirring the gene pool was the main reason I decided to do some splits.

I know.... it's so hard to hatch them! Then once you do, you have to worry about them living

The little showgirl is still trugging along, but his legs were messed up. I finally figured out how to use the bandaid, and he is walking pretty good now. I have one other baby that I'm not sure he is going to make it, but pretty sure he is lav also. Was really weak when he hatched. Looks like another one of those dinosaurs

he keeps flipping on his back, and that is usually a bad sign.

I think I have 4 lav's outside with the broody moms. They are still doing okay. I might end up with one, finally, lol.
