Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Thank you both for your info and help, most appreciated. The adult isa/porc birds I purchased and had shipped, so I was uncertian about the "genetics" for resulting color, thus reason I asked about the blue. As far as the whites go, I figured that's what the answer would be but I wanted to make 100% sure. I will go ahead and seperate them into 2 groups for strickly whites

As far as the little wht carrier lavs, I should probably just cull them and continue with my other program, correct ?? These are the first I've had from the whites so it's been a bit tricky trying to figure out WHERE to use them, if at all. Again, thanks for the help, I surely appreciate it.

Fabulous sentiment. I absolutely agree about finding the correct questions to ask breeders, and when the discussion about B/B/S and Lav came up repeatedly, I could logic my way into finding a good thing in mixing the genes, but cooler heads prevailed and asserted that while it may give a desirable pattern (Lav Splash) it would pose MONSTROUS confusion issues and potential surprises and problems in the genetic trickle-down, as offspring had hidden qualities. I suspect White and Lav is even worse, as the White is recessive, too.

I wholeheartedly agree we should all keep our breeding programs organized so that we can share the facts as we know them, and appreciate everyone's input here, even if I am only a lurker in this thread most of the time!

That all being said, I want RED!!! Who has Red Silkies, and point me to them NOW!!?!?!!

Ok, obnoxiousness will subside if you don't laugh too hard at me...I've just started obsessing with red birds.

Oh, yes. The obsession with a new color. I know it well. I'm working on Porcelain and Lavender. My poor husband does not understand why I want these colors since I already have a ton of silkies in black, buff, blue, white.... a silkie is a silkie. I just looked at him and told him he just wouldn't understand. I can't explain it. It is what it is. And nicely asked him to please stop interrupting my silkie daydreams.

If anyone knows how to explain this chicken phenomenon to a confused spouse, let me know! I'm just thankful he doesn't know how much I've spent on hatching eggs!

Has anyone else used Gray to get splits? Anyone forsee potential problems I might run into. My 1st generation gray/lav splits are turning out to be some beautiful birds! Most of them are turning out to be nice looking standard grays! The Lavender seems to have really helped offset the gold tones that so often bleed through. I really cant wait to see what they will throw when I breed tham back to Lav.

My "mutts" turn out to be fairly nice grays. One I got directly from Bren as a small baby is quite a beautiful roo. My own are lav/? splits.

At first I had only one lav roo, and I crossed him with whatever hens I had. I've crossed the mutts back with each other and to another lav roo, and I get a lot of silver partridges (grays). Also crossed the second roo to black.

Now have several lavs from Bren and Deb (the two earlier roos were from them as well), some of which have been crossed to black. Have around 15 pure lavs, including one showgirl. None has reached maturity yet, and several are only a few days to a couple of weeks old. Also some beautiful blacks that are lav splits. Their color is very intense.

Occasionally get a nice lavender from one of the pure lav roos and one of the gray splits.

Would you call this hen a lavender? She was sold to me as a lavender, but I am questioning her because I had her paired with my lavender sg roo and I got one chipmunk and one blue chick. The only other hens in this pen are blacks split to lav and they are BLACK deff not dark blues (plus I am pretty sure they weren't laying anyway). Could she be a blue that was diluted in color, but actually a split? She does have the darker blue head that was mentioned in some recent posts and is more shaded than any of my other lavs. If she is not lav, but a split with the blue gene, I would like to know so I can sell her. I only want Lavs, and black splits so I know what I am going to get. I don't have much room so would like to have mor control over what I produce.
