Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

The rooster looks lavender to me... the only way to know is to know it's breeding FOR SURE.

We had one genetically blue (but looked black as black could be) BEAUTIFUL hen that produced odd colored chicks when bred to a lavender rooster.

The leg/getting into position issue is a lavender & lavender split thing for sure. That alone makes me thing the roo is lavender!

We keep our humidity at 55% through incubation and then up to 65% at hatch. However our incubators are inside in the A/C (low house humidity).

I would contact the breeder to find out the birds history and see if it IS lavender. It may be a split or like others have said splash.

A lot of sellers do not understand the lavender gene and just because the gene MAY be in the line does NOT AT ALL mean you will get lavender birds.

This is the lav roo that you & I were bidding for last fall.

His dad is a 3rd generation lav from Fawkes Feather Farm....mom is black lav split from Bobbi Porto.

I expected black chicks, but not blues!

I think I just give up on this lav project....I have spent so much money on this roo & black hens of the best breeding...so frustrating!!

Anybody want blue silkie chicks....free...come get 'em...I have about 40 now & the incubator's full again.

Edited to add:

I just went out & had a cold, hard look at my boy out in the sun....pics below...he's now 1 year old & hasn't had a bath lately (please excuse the dirt). What I see now is a blue roo....possibly splash as some of you thought.....

OMG really??? I hope he is lavender! The reason I said splash was he looks like he has a black spot on his wing by his primaries. Maybe a light spot too at the base of his tail.

The only other reason I can think for blue chicks would be if he is lav, could your black hens actually be vey dark blue? If she is split and he is lav you should get half lavs, half splits, which is why I said maybe he is splash.

I went though the same thing! I paid big $$$ for a few "lavs" and got burned. Don't give up they really are lovely....I am sending you a PM too

If you change your mind, just let me know. I'll put on some coffee & we'll talk chicken while you pick out all the blue babies you want!

that is soo tempting. I have no idea how to even get there LOL
I have only been there once and that was years ago. I am not sure how far of a drive it would be from fort worth. This is when I could use my own plane LOL.

I may just have to order some so I can have some shipped to me.

perolane~~if the second set of pics of your roo, is the same roo in the first pics---he definitely is not a Lav---I'm sorry to say. It sounds as though your roo's breeding problem came from his mothers side. Still---if you have been breeding him to black/lav split girls, you SHOULD have hatched a few lavs. Even if the girls are dark blue (appearing to be black) split to Lav, it should have resulted in some Lav chicks.

It's a lesson we all learn the hard way---KNOW your seller (from whom you're buying your stock).
This is not meant to insult anyone....forgive me if it does.

Yes, second set of pics is the same roo about 6 months later. He's really a beautiful boy...normally he has a huge fluffy butt, but has been trimmed WAY down for fertility...and he's just loveable & friendly...I adore him! I'm just really disappointed too.

I've been hatching non-stop for months, all I get are blues & a few blacks. I have pure black hens, black/lav split hens, & I even tossed in 2 white showgirls.....just get blues. Some are very light at hatching, but feather out blue.

No offense or insult taken by your response...I appreciate your input....and this definately has been a very expensive lesson.
