it might be fertile but we never hatch or incubate those first few eggs as they are not as vigorous as more mature ones!

How long did it take your guy to figure it out?

Let's see, I've had him since Halloween, and the pullet started laying in late November. So over a month? But the eggs I tried to set from them last week still aren't developing.

I will keep trying.

Hi all, last week I goy my first hatch out of 2 black/lav splits and momma is sitting on a bunch of eggs now (I stole 2 and incubated) got one black and ........ this one! One question for you experienced Silkie folks is the separation in the feathers normal, I don't ever remember seeing that "snowman" effect on other silkie chicks I've seen???? Any thoughts..... feedback welcome.. Thanks in advance!

Hatch Day - nice light lav color pics look a bit lighter than the actual color...

Hi Mystic, Cute baby!!!!
If you are talking about the separation of the "ball" on the chicks head [from the neck]...that is normal, that's it's little crest showing up.
Looks like a nice one too!

Hopefully second time is a charm

Hey everyone! Wanted to revive this thread! It has been dead. Is anyone still working on lavs? I guess paints are the hot color of the time :)

As for me I have hatched just two lavs so far this year, one was petted out (had extra toenails) and one I am growing out. This is my first year with a lav roo over lav hens (I had been doing lav to splits only) and have noticed much worse hatch rates from that pen...they develop well then quit during lockdown. I am thinking of switching some pens around and going back to my split to lav breeding as I was getting way more to hatch that way.

Would love to hear how others lavs are doing! :)
