Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

I recently had a silkie chick hatch from a black hen and a blue split roo and was wondering if someone could tell me if it is a black chick or a blue? The roo was a dark blue and because this one has a very light belly I'm thinking it is a blue as well. Are black chicks hatched jet black or do they have something light feathering in there as well?

He looks black to me. Self-blues would never look this dark at hatching. Blues is a different thread, but a lighter or even white or yellow belly is possible both with blacks and blues.

Well he is 6 wks old now and definitely looking black rather than blue. Reason I had asked back then was because I did in fact have a dark blue that hatched out as dark as this one and ended up being a dark blue, not black. I also had a lavender split Blue roo that was pretty dark and the roo to these chicks. So thats why I get confused when looking at these guys in certain light. Here are some pics from today.

I think your chick is a splash rather than self blue. The just hatched pic looks like a splash to me. It may be a dilute splash, but I expect it will get the splash markings as it matures more.

In that case, you will just have to wait until adult plumage to know for sure. If you tell us which varieties were hens and roosters, we might be able to give you a better idea.

There was lav & blue roos over, lav, blue, splash, white hens. But no way to tell who bred who. Guess I will just wait.

Does anyone have any Lavender silikes for sale? I am looking for a pair or trio of SQ lavenders. Thanks!!!!
