Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

I thought the PI's hatched out looking like chipmunks. I know Brenda hatches out Lavenders that look like chipmunks, but in the end they are all the same Lavender color.

She said it didn't change the feathering color, they were wondering if they would be darker lav's or lighter lav's, but you can not tell the difference when they get they older.

So, I am going to say that they are Lavender's.

I also bought 6 birds from Sunshine silkies after the george let down.

I lost a white and a splash from shipping.

But I ended up with 3 beautiful white hens and a splash hen from her. How that for luck

She was very very nice. And even got me back a refund for my shipping because they were late and I lost two.

I just hatched my first batch of silkies ever.

I got around 20 I believe. Mostly blue, two or so splash, two white. Then I got these three weird chicks.

I have Buff Brahma Bantams. And two chicks hatched that looked like brahmas. I didn't think they were laying yet. But I believe I had found an egg or two laying around and bated it so it must of been theirs. I was so pleased. Then upon further inspection I noticed they have 5 toes.

One almost appears to have blue underfeathers. They have to be crossed with silkie? But they have no vault, look completely normal except an extra toe. They have yellow skin. The only problem is my silkies have never been out of their pen. And it's like fort knox. It even has wire on the bottom. No way they could of mixed. I am so confuzed. It's been bothering me for days. lol

Then I have another weird little silkie chick. It's kind of cream colored, it loks like a normal silkie except it has green skin.

And I only have B/B/S and white silkies. And it's a funny color. lol

My poor brain is so confuzed. Can anyone guess what has happened. I'll try to get some pictures if you guys don't mind looking at them? I hate to intrude in your topic. But I am working on lavender silkies. And I love a good silkie chat. lol

Yes. I'm starting to confuse myself now. Suze is the one who identified why my white chicks were this color and why the males kept the gray in their tails once they had their adult feathers.

There is an obvious color difference in the whites that have the silver gene and those that don't. If we're not storming tomorrow I'll see if I can get a pic of the one hen that is not the bright white along side of one of those that is. Or maybe grab a bunch of the super whites and plunk that one duller white in the middle. That's if they co-operate and don't decide to hate each other.

I can't help out much in this discussion, other than to say that silver gene whites hatch out as grey chicks that feather out white, and "regular" whites hatch out yellow and feather out white. I'm not sure how you would determine this with an adult bird.

I don't think Brenda hatches out chipmunk-looking babes anymore that are lavenders; and those she did were very light and very muted stripes. Her early lavenders were that way. I'm pretty sure that all of her lavs now hatch out looking like self blues.

Last time I was at her farm, I bought four of the "chipmunk" chicks that were dark like those just pictured; Bren said they were half lavs. I ended up keeping only one, who feathered out gray, with just a tiny bit of pale, reddish color in some of his primaries. I've just put him with four grays (also half lavs), and expect to hatch out some lavs.

The Isabel Porcelains that are hatching out here look very much like Bren's early lavs, with very muted striping on their backs, except they have a small amount of buff coloring. So far, they are feathering out nicely with the lavender ground and just a little buff overlay, mostly on the breast area. I'm eager for them to get their mature feathering. The three older ones that hatched before I had any idea what Isabel Porcelains are, were the same. It was a bit startling to see those chicks that were so different, but I liked them, and it was a couple of years before I knew what they were.

Yes. Post No. 137 on page 14 really clarifies it. The ones with the dark, very contrasting stripes are what they used to call "mutts," and will feather out basically gray (silver partridge) with some muted reddish color--mine have that color on the wing primaries if at all. They should carry the lavender gene, and should produce some lavs if bred with a lav or other half lavs.

AHHH.... The breeder I was getting my Lavenders from had a coon attack last night and the coon ate my birds.

I sent him an email asking if her had anyother Lavender pairs for sale. Today is just terrible.

So sorry. Raccoon attacks are just horrible! It's been a few years, but we've been through that. I'm getting lav chicks, but it will be next year before I'll have adults for sale. Mine are all out of Bren and Deb's stock. More and more people are raising lavs, so it should become easier to get them.
