Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

If you still have birds at risk move them now or do something to fortify your coop because the coon or coons will be back tonight. They will return for repeated tries until they realize that there is nothing there for them or they can't get in. If you have other coops built in the same configuration as that one they will be at risk too.

I had one trying to break in to my Silkie coop a few years ago. There were paw prints going up the outside of the building, it used the pen wire to climb, where it tried to go in under the soffit.

sorry to hear that bacres

OK Cammy I am not sure what we are talking about exactly BUT if I hatch a mutt now it is from a black split to lavender and a lavender(colored) bird. I am still working with showgirls in lavender so those crossings are NOT lavender to lavender( showing lavender color having the two genes) yet and YES I will throw a mutt here and there but my lavender to lavender ALL hatch out showing lavender, being pure lavender. Some of the chicks have stripes but not the DARK color of mutts. Self blue/lavender hatch a very light soft pastel color. some with stripes and some with less down. The ones with less down are going to catch up and be the darker of the two chicks, having dark dark eyes, beaks and skin. Please remember that just because it looks lavender doesn't make it so. You need to do your homework and find out how these "lavender" birds were bred. I have heard from way too many people that are very disappointed in what they have paid a lot of money for from other sources. I want to add that I recently found out that these chicks with less down may have more trouble hatching since down with the proper humdity allows the chicks to slide around and pip. Less down may stop that action thus they die. I am going to look better at what doesn't make it out. I try to time my hatches where I am here to "help". I do find silkies harder to hatch than other breeds I have had.

ANYTHING you cross to a pure lavender bird (pure being the key here) you will have offspring carrying one lavender gene the first generation. Cross those back to pure lavender and you will get a percentage of lavender colored birds while some will still be mutts. I prefer using black as the other base color. Does it sound like this takes a long time to do? YES...it has taken us years now to feel good about our lines. Deb is always reminding me as well as others that lavenders are still a work in progress. We feel we have them consitent and ready to be recognized as a new variety in ABA and APA standards.

So to sum this up...the term mutts is the strange looking DARK chicks that hatch from pairings that are NOT with TWO pure lavender birds. Stripes are still in some of my lavnder chicks but they are lavender not the dark color we refer to as mutts. Stripes don't make them mutts just the fact they are not full blood does and in my lines they were darker down and dark stripes. This is one of those things that once you SEE you have it. Good luck to you all. We need all the support for lavender we can get.

hey Bren, my lav roo is doing great!

can you take a look at my black/lav chicks in my pics a few pages back and tell me what you think? I have never hatched them before. they are the oned after the lavs. or and any other pointers would be most helpful

If this is who I think it is...? He is lucky to have had you. Most would have given up on him. I'll see if I can find the pictures.

yep its me I got the trio from you last year and the boy had the head trauma from shipping. You would never know he was so sick for so long. I just adore all 3 of them especially the beardless hen who has produced some amazing chicks

I am so confused I mover the PI pair and the lesser pq lav hen into a new pen.

Now with the lav sire from you I have only lavs, one lav split (that I am trying to determine if it is carrying the lav gene) and a buff and a black SG and a buff lav split (same thing trying to determine if it is a lav split or not although it has what looks like lav in the tail)

I thought I hatched out PI this time but now I am not sure...

here is a recent pic of the Sire.

the girls are finishing a molt and look terrible at the moment although the crests are coming in even bigger if you can imagine!

oh and here is the first lav I ever hatched from your roo and one of the 3 girls (not sure which one though

) oh you can also see a white lav split's rump next to it. See the lav in the tail?? I was growing it out with some whites but it is now with the lavs.

Thanks to ALL who seem to understand that this is NOT my full time job or my LIFE. I love what I am doing but I do have a full time job during the week. I have just gone back and deleted my previous post for WHY I am not available. I don't feel I have to explain. This is mainly a hobby which I enjoy MOST of the time.
