Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

The plans are now for them to be ready to be considered at Shawnee, Oklahoma in December of this year. All should try to attend since it is always a great show and this year will be a annual meet for APA. There should be a lot of birds there!

I agree. I was not bashing anyone. I completely understand people have lives outside of chickens. I was just sharing that 3 weeks wasn't really that long to wait. And in my opinion. Good things come to those who wait.

Sorry if I offended anyone. George M has wonderful silkies. And if I'm lucky I will still be able to get my hands on some one day. I wasn't upset that he didn't have birds to sell. I was upset that he didn't just tell me he didn't, and that he sold to another person the exact birds I had asked several times about.

But what has happened has happened. And I am very sorry that he is having problems with his health. It would be so sad to have to sell off some or all of the birds you have poured your heart and soul into.

Bren maybe I will be contacting you in a few months about getting me some lavs. lol. If I can't hatch any out myself.

IF you feel you can learn from meeting other breeders and picking their brains, if you think seeing a lot of really nice silkies will give you something to compare to, if you want to just have a great time, YES!

PS...staying at the Holiday Inn Express. We are already making reservations there since this will be a big show. There are lots of motel/hotels to choose from.

I also agree 100% with Suze. We are fortunate to have wonderful, helpful, generous breeders among us who are working hard to improve our Silkies and to introduce new colors.

Attending/participating in the show at Shawnee in December will be a great way to meet wonderful people with interests similar to ours and to view the quality of birds we should be aiming for. A world of information is out there and will be shared willingly at this show. There are generally nice birds for sale at the Shawnee shows.

OK Cammy I am not sure what we are talking about exactly BUT if I hatch a mutt now it is from a black split to lavender and a lavender(colored) bird. I am still working with showgirls in lavender so those crossings are NOT lavender to lavender( showing lavender color having the two genes) yet and YES I will throw a mutt here and there but my lavender to lavender ALL hatch out showing lavender, being pure lavender. Some of the chicks have stripes but not the DARK color of mutts. Self blue/lavender hatch a very light soft pastel color. some with stripes and some with less down. The ones with less down are going to catch up and be the darker of the two chicks, having dark dark eyes, beaks and skin. Please remember that just because it looks lavender doesn't make it so. You need to do your homework and find out how these "lavender" birds were bred. I have heard from way too many people that are very disappointed in what they have paid a lot of money for from other sources. I want to add that I recently found out that these chicks with less down may have more trouble hatching since down with the proper humdity allows the chicks to slide around and pip. Less down may stop that action thus they die. I am going to look better at what doesn't make it out. I try to time my hatches where I am here to "help". I do find silkies harder to hatch than other breeds I have had.

ANYTHING you cross to a pure lavender bird (pure being the key here) you will have offspring carrying one lavender gene the first generation. Cross those back to pure lavender and you will get a percentage of lavender colored birds while some will still be mutts. I prefer using black as the other base color. Does it sound like this takes a long time to do? YES...it has taken us years now to feel good about our lines. Deb is always reminding me as well as others that lavenders are still a work in progress. We feel we have them consitent and ready to be recognized as a new variety in ABA and APA standards.

So to sum this up...the term mutts is the strange looking DARK chicks that hatch from pairings that are NOT with TWO pure lavender birds. Stripes are still in some of my lavnder chicks but they are lavender not the dark color we refer to as mutts. Stripes don't make them mutts just the fact they are not full blood does and in my lines they were darker down and dark stripes. This is one of those things that once you SEE you have it. Good luck to you all. We need all the support for lavender we can get.

Bren,

I apologize, I try to take in too much knowledge at one time

But, luckily I have you to keep me straightened out! I need to get a log, so my pea brain can't scramble things up!

So, the chipmunks are Splits, I'll remember that, I promise. LOL Sorry Happychick, I was stearing you wrong! I'll start setting back a little and learning some more before I offer any help.

I'll eventually get it all together.

I have had good luck hatching my silkies now after Sunshine told me what humidity to use for them.

Brenda, I apologize for comments I made on here about things that I shouldnt have, I wont make an excuse for it, I am aware I handled the situation poorly....again, my apologies, and hope your schedule slows down and that you have a nice summer....
