Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Well....I'm Brenda in PA and this is my 9th year for silkies. I've had great one and bad ones and loved them all.

. The crest is the last thing to come out so this is usually insignificant at this age. The crest are all full of feathers, so I would expect great crest on all of them. The wings are nicely shaped and wing feathers are all coming in nicely and they all have big fluffy butts! Foot feathering is light.
One thing I do is wean them off med chick starter right into gamebird starter.
This is my favorite time with silkies, I like to play "guess the sex" with photo's. Sometimes, when you look at thier pictures it just jumps out at you. I'm usually right!

I just went through my 5 wk olds, banding and taking notes on toes, combs & crests w/pics.
I have an interesting chick that hatched out with chipmunk markings. I now suspect her (my guess) to be a lavender or at least a split.

Brenda you are amazing and just made my day! I am not as computer literate as you to do that to photos-Good to know about the crests as those havent really been major concerns. The feet feathering yes-I have to work on those -this is my 2nd year on silkies-I started out with them and no others so its been a real joy to do it

yours looks to be Lav not split shes so pretty and foot feathering is so so nice

These chicks are Bobbi Porto's and the chipmunk one I believe came from a lav split pen.
It's fun to watch them and guess. I look for the backward slant of the crest feathers, like thier comb is pushing it back, for the cockerels. Pullets tend to grow thier crests more upright. I hope I'm wrong on some of mine

Out of 14 chicks, I only see 6 pullets!

Very nice chicks! I think the Chipmunk one is a Lavender Split, just because of the darker spots it has. Those could go away. Way too young for me to guess sex though.

ok so that puts me at 3 pullets and 3 roos and #2 unknown...LOL not holding you to it but it would be great if that was the case Im going to go look at their crests and see how they are coming in -now I cannot wait for the next 11 to hatch....yeah!!! thank you so much
