Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Just a reminder, a split lavender is apparent ONLY from breeding records/information. There is NO evidence in the appearance of the bird that it carries one copy of lav.

Lavender has no affect on the blue gene; they are genetically unrelated. Splash X black offspring are 100% blue whether there is lavender in either of the parent birds ot not. Likewise with other Splash, Blue and black pairings--the percentages hold true whether the parents carry lav or not.

Splash X splash ALWAYS breeds true. Whether or not the splashing dilutes after several generations makes no difference on it still being splash.

The appearance of a blue or splash bird who is also lavender (not split, but pure--two copies of lav) is more like that of blue or splash than of lavender. You will see darker head, hackles and saddle (on male) feathers or splashes. I personally do not believe that you can tell from the birds overall colouring that it is also lavender; you might suspect, but I have seen birds that are not lavender that do have the "lavender" hue to their blue or base colouring. You CAN tell by a close look at the shafts on the tails.

I know some of us are also interested in Porcelains, or maybe more accurately, Isabels. Does anyone have any pictures of Isabel roosters? I've seen several pics of Isabel hens, but none of roos. In fact, the only Isabel roo I've seen at all is mine, and he just barely has any buff. His babes are too young yet to know how they're going to turn out (I think a couple of them are lavs). I have two Isabel hens, but one is very light on the buff and the other a little heavy.

I know there is a Porcelain thread also, but people participate in this one more than that, and since Porcelains (Isabels) are closely related to the lavs, I thought they could be included here.

Thanks for any help.

What characteristics should the shaft specifically have? I've yet to hear an answer to this. I suspect my hen is at least a split, if not full lavender so what would I see at the tail shaft?

Oh thank you, that helps a lot.

Do you think this guy will throw chicks with the silver in their hackles when bred to a black hen? He is Black/Lavender split. Trying to figure out if I am going to keep him or not. He is a nice looking boy. He's about 3 months old. Nice crest starting, excellent foot feathering and starting to get a nice butt on him.

He is a nice boy and I was told that it is easy to breed out the color in the hackles but I am not really sure.

I hate to say this but if he already has silver in his hackles, it probably is going to become more pronounced as he gets older. That's just my experience.

I repectfully disagree that it is easy to breed out the white. If you have hens with enough melanizers, it's possible, but you have to KNOW your hens background for a couple of generations.

I know that he is split lav, BUT...you can really mess up a breeding program using a bird like that. It broke my heart, but I sold a GORGEOUS split lav black cockerel at 7 months because of it. He had none as a chick and by 4 months had just a tiny bit of white. By 7 months it was like the pic. Here he is:
