Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

I just have to add...the "hobby name" is self blue. Lavender is the genetic name. BUT....trying to get that changed.....SURE! LOL The color is from the lavender gene.

Can someone please sum up the topic of converstaion right now. I did not know they chose to use self blue rather than lavender. I would very much like to join the conversation.

Yep it was from and experimental master silkie breeder. And yep they're not real porcelains. But they're not isabel. You are right that is lavender over buff. These if bred and created correctly are more of a double lavender dosed golden lakenvelder. NO pattern genes like self blue.

That's an interesting take. So what people are calling a Porcelain in Silkies is a Lavender Vorwerk color (Lakenvelder being the white pattern, Vorwerk being the gold)? How cool is that??!!
Here's a shot of a Blue Vorwerk so you can see what it might look like with flat feathers (substituting Lav for Blue, of course)

That really should just be called Lav Vorwerk so when someone wants to make a Lav Mille Fleur down the line they can use the proper term!! I prefer the Apricot name, though.

I thought maybe some would be interested in a discussion of down coloring genetics: http://sellers.kippenjungle.nl/page2.html#t185

In
Lavenders, you would substitute the color black in any description with the Lavender down mentally, because a Lavender is still a Black, technically, just diluted by 2 copies of an additional gene.

Nothing more than the fact they declinded our choice of Lavender for the name of the new variety of silkies....we have to go with the ABA and APA ruling. There are several other breeds that already have "lavender" varieties (color) and they are accepted into the standards of both ABA and APA as self blue rather than lavender. When I first started with silkies, I found self blue and blue confusing. To me....blue looks charcoal or grey and then there is self blue(lavender).Donnie and Deb early on wanted to call them Lavenders as self blue is called in Europe. If you have seen lavender it DOES fit so well. So, long story short...we call them lavender as long as they are AOV but now...to get into the standards we have to go with the powers that be and call them "self blue".

To me....and between us, I feel sure we will always call them LAVS.

Having something accepted into standards of both ABA and APA is a big deal. It takes at least 5 years and 5 breeders who have worked hard with getting the quality and type consistent. Then...you have the qualifying meets that require a special juding, not just the show judging. There is tons of paper work to be gathered and submitted to both clubs. Like I have said...a LONG ROAD.

Well stated! It's always going to be Lavender in every breed...You'll just call them Self-Blue at the show on the paperwork. What are they thinking?? Sheesh.

yep. Should be bringing (possibly) a black show hopeful (no guarantees) maybe some cuckoo girls, possibly seramas to sell. Im not sure yet. Got a sale pen, so bringing something. Oh and should have silkie pins to sell. Splash, black, white etc.
Along with upwards of twenty show birds. All silkies, one duck, nothing else this time around.

you got it! but dilute the gold too:)
great looking bird.
I have my fingers in a palomino silkie too. Not going so well using an old vorwerk. So went out and have golden lakenvelders to use for them now.
Thats a great looking bird by the way!
Thanks on the self blue apricot. Maybe I should post something on the variety name and see what opinions I get:)
