Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Featherbaby,

Have you checked her wings?
Lavs should have white rachis (or shaft) on top of their feathers.

And black rachis on bottom of their feathers.

Thanks Cheshie Chick....I didn't know about this 'test'. I'll look at her tomorrow in the daylight.

Any ideas about whether it's better to have a lavender roo over a black/split lav. hen or the other way around to get mostly lavender babies? Does the roo or the hen influence the chick's characteristics more?

Beautiful! But I would say the porcelain looks more like lavender partridge; see the penciling?

I've never heard of a lavender partridge. What makes it so? I have a similar one, just a shade darker than hers. I thought it was a porcelain too. Please define 'penciling' for me?

You're Welcome.

I personally am using a 100% Lav Rooster for my gray splits, because thats what I have to work with. Of course I would also use him if I had black splits, just because I think he's a beautiful bird

I'm not sure genetics wise which is better though...... I'll leave that one to the more experienced breeders.

Ya know, I have wondered that myself! It does appear that way, doesn't it? My thought was it may have come from the Lavender side of things. If I look closely at my lavs feathers some almost have a penciled striping on them. The gray definitely dominates. Not all of the chicks have that penciled "cuckoo" appearance. So far this little one is my fav, and of course is looking more rooish every day

Sure! I actually bought her at the Kentuckiana Poultry Show some months back. I saw a bunch of your birds there Donna, I remember your logo on the cards. They were beautiful! Apparently a woman had bought about an entire flock from you and was just picking them up there. I kept running up to each cage going AW DANG ITS SOLD!

She is a pretty bird, but she has a lot of gold/red bleed through. Her features are nice, so I bought her. I had read somewhere that Lavender can help to cross out gold/red tones. Seems to have worked

Dad is the rooster pictured in my avatar.

Nahh girl, they were a gift for a friend. Just brought a delivery and we needed to keep them somewhere until after the show so we stuck a "for sale" sign on the coops. Your a Kentucky gal I see. I don't do a lot of shows, prefer to stay home and do what I love, the breeding. I try to do at least two a year, next time, please introduce yourself. Going to any of these local Kentucky and Indiana shows in December? BRRRRR! Give me a shout sometime, love talking to the home girls.

I will certainly keep in touch! I am trying to get to know other local breeders with good quality birds. Aside from the Lavs, I am wanting to start a B/B/Spl pen. If you know any good local breeders with B/B/Spl please PM me their contact info! I would love to see some of mine enter the shows someday. Right now I am just in the beginning stages of this addictive hobby! I've already decided we need to look into a small farm

Alrighty. Don't know about the PM stuff gal, don't do much forum chatting. Best email me for show information. I got in here looking for a thread about calico's but got lost, as usual, and then those ginger reds grabbed my eyeballs and I just had to say something about those! And then when you mentioned grays I have to stick my nose in there because that's a subject I can't resist. I have PM messages from months ago LOL Don't know if my email is on here or not but my site is and my email is on that.
