I've heard different things from different Self Blue (Lavender) breeders.... One says the Blue is better.... but I always like to test things myself... and Deb, who has been breeding them for years... says Black is better, so I think Black would be best. If a Silkie has all the right features, just about anyone would want it whether it was a showable color or not, though.
I did breed one of mine to Black, but she must have been Blue because I got some gorgeous Blues and Blacks from the cross. One just got BV at the show last weekend. Such a gorgeous slate gray.
Also... at the OH Nat'l, there was a Blue/Splash category that was judged seperately from Blue or Splash and they had their own BV and RV.... They were the Smokey colored Splash that have Self Blue (Lavender) in them...
In my 11 years of raising Silkies I have never had one that no one wanted. So don't worry too much about it... just have fun and try to do the best you can with what you have.
This thread is long, so maybe I've said this before... I just want to say I have some gorgeous Self Blue (Lavenders) from Deb and they have done really well with mine. I should have some extras pretty soon... the split pens are starting to produce them.
ON another note... I am wondering if Splash, White and Lavender could be in the mix for a Paint... because I got several from a coop that has those colors in the genes... blended together.... They all look Splash... some have a smokey base and some a white base... the coop is on the top of my June page on my site.
