Self-sufficient households; help!

Finally found everything today!!!
I found the FN at a small local food coop and as for the washing soda it is actually a funny story... I was at my MIL's and she was cleaning her cupboards, she found an old box of washing soda that she brought home from my DH's Grandmothers house after she passed away. My MIL was about to throw it out!! I said are you crazy!! I have been looking for this stuff! I finally ordered some online last night but I had to pay 15.00+ since it was 4.00+ for the box and 11.00+ for shipping!
Anyway I just made a batch and have my first load in the washer. So far so good. I was pleased with the smell. I was a little worried about that but really, its not bad at all! I will report on how well it cleans my three boys socks later!!

Sorry if this is double posting, but how about reading the Tightwad Gazette? Lots of ideas for saving money and being more self sufficient!

Great ideas here! I went to hillbillyhousewife.com and found the recipe for dishwasher detergent:

1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda

Mix. Add 2-3 tablespoons per load of dishes. Put vinegar into rinse aid dispenser for cheap rinse aid!

I found that one too, didn't check shipping rate, but, Soapsgoneby shipping was pretty high, I thought. Can't wait to get these and get the detergent made, it is getting great reviews on here, lol.

11.00+ for shipping

I think in the long run, it might be cheaper to buy regular laundry soap for that price. I just can't believe the price!

Do you have a Kroger's near you or a Fred Meyer? They seem to be carrying everything.

I found the fels naptha for only .99 a bar. I was soooo happy but then realized I would have to buy the washing soda online. Can someone please tell me what the difference between baking soda and washing soda is. I mean chemical difference. On the baking soda it says you can add it to the laundry and use it to balance the ph in your water so I am wondering what is different with the washing soda.
