Self-sufficient households; help!

there was a good thread here once on homemade cleaning products. I condensed it on my blog here if you are interested in more recipes. We made the Laundry Soap (Gel) recipe a few weeks ago, and we LOVE IT! Thanks Southern28girl! When you use the homemade laundry gel with your solar dryer (clothesline) there is no more heavenly smell

We found both washing soda and fels naptha at Rosauers in Hood River.

Washing soda is made by arm and hammer, you can get it at walmart... and as the poster of the recipe said, in canada we dont have naptha, so instead use sunlight bars..which you FOR SURE will be able to find RIGHT NEXT TO the washing soda at walmart.

I looked for the washing soap today at Walmart. I didn't see anything called washing soap. Is that what it's called. I also didn't see Naptha. I found the bleach alternative powder and Borax. I'll have to keep looking.

None of the Walmarts I've ever been have either one. I get mine at my local grocery store. You can also find both at www.soapsgonebuy.com

I buy my stuff at Kroger. If the bleach alternative is the same thing as oxyclean, DO NOT try adding that. It was a disaster when I did it. It bubbled out everywhere and was an embarrassing situtation.

It's called Washing Soda... I didn't see it for like 20 minutes, and then saw it so you have to look hard, it should be like right next to the Borax, and there's also Sunlight bars...they're the alternative to Naptha, but as mentioned somewhere before..you can use other soaps.

The dry colour-safe bleach is Javex I believe...

I am also having a difficult time finding the Fels Naptha and the Washing Soda. I was at three different stores today including Wal-Mart (I hate that store! Even worse on Sundays!). Good thing I had to get things at all three anyway! I will try our local hardware store tomorrow. Someone suggested a smaller stor might have it. I never thought of looking at the Dollar Store. I will maybe try there tomorrow too. It is on the way to the other store anyway. If not I will try the website you all listed. Thanks for such helpful household tips and please keep them coming everyone!

S28C, we did not add fragrance. We liked the regular "Fels Naptha" smell, and as I mentioned, combined with air drying, it was so fresh! I just kept sniffing my tshirt today. I probably looked like a pervert or something

Edited to add: We also use the dishwasher soap recipe you gave.

Dishwasher Detergent

Mix and use per dishwasher load:

1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda

Glasses come out a little cloudy, but everything is nice and clean without the horrifying bleach smell of store bought dishwasher detergent. We love all this stuff, and it is very cost effective!
