Selfies with your ducks

oh, that's awful. Poor little innocent Wobbles. I am glad they left him alone. As Miss Lydia said, they are beautiful but I have seen swans bully geese and ducks at the river where I live. Nature is a wondrous and beastly entity.

Yeah. They even bully the Canadian geese when they park it by the pond and breed each Spring! I keep hearing how ostriches are the closest living things to dinosaurs we have...I disagree. That would be swans. Watch one up close, their powerful scaly legs, their primitive hissing and even the way they walk...they're dinosaurs. Graceful, beautiful, terrible dinosaurs!

Ish. The scaly legs. I have not ever seen one up that close before. But I guess that's their temperament. I would respect their beauty too but not their abusive behaviour towards other birds. I would Never harm one. Will stay away and I would other non swans to do the same.

There are 3 geese that live at the lake down the street and have been there for years. They attack all the joggers and kids on the playground. My friend ended up being penned up the slide with her kids. I know geese can be pretty mean but I was wondering if that's normal for "pets" as well as the ones that are out in the wild so to speak. Someone did befriend them and they come up to their yard and put their heads in the mans lap and he pets them.
I loved swans until I read about them. Soooooo pretty but man, they are mean!!!
I know I may get some feed back about this but I really think alot of the aggression you see from Geese in parks etc is from humans, they feed them and the geese get so demanding they lose their fear and think every person they see has food and are pretty demanding about it too, plus kids and adults harass them, A member on here was talking about how kids and these are kids with parents and grandparents were allowed to chase down the water fowl hit them with sticks and rocks someone at their park a teen went out on an island and shot the geese that were sleeping there. Geese don't forget cruelty. Your not even suppose to kill another animal in front of them they are so sensitive. Like if your processing. And if they have gosling of course they are going to protect them wouldn't you protect your children if they felt threatened?

Geese are awesome birds, temperamental specially during mating season and when they have kids but there is just something about their personality, I really like them alot. I do expect them to respect me as their head person though and sometimes that takes a while to sink in. Especially with ganders.It's a life long commitment though geese can live 20 years and beyond.

that is true. Last year some goslings were throwing themselves off the roof of a 15' building while the parents waited below. They would land on the asphalt and bounce. I was horrified. I went and picked one up to right him and his Mom came at me hissing with wings open. I put him down promptly and left. He was OK. First time ever I'd seen a goose tongue. Big and pink like a human's.
I would have been terrified if I saw that, and of course would have tried to help too, did they all make it okay?

oh, Miss Lydia, that's awful to know that humans are mean to them. Terrible. Some people can be wretched. That's enlightening to hear from an experienced water fowl owner such as yourself to hear that. I can see why they could act like that. Poor things. They need to be left alone. It bugs me to see people feed the waterfowl where I live when it is posted for them not to. Especially bread. I've heard that's bad for the birds' stomachs. I didn't know any of that and I have seen bigger birds act aggressively toward smaller birds but that's no comparison to stupid people mistreating them. I feel like crying now.

Julie Bird I didn't mean to upset although it upsets me too when I hear these things, I don't think geese start out to act aggressively towards humans unless they have goslings but it's like any wild animal even domestic ones that live in the wild, they get use to being treated cruelly or feed the wrong diet and of course everyone is only going to see that side. but look what needlessjunk said about the person who befriended the geese and they lay their heads in his lap and he pets them. That's the kind of stories I like to hear.

that's OK Miss Lydia. I have to take to hearing the bad with the good. I was touched by what needlessjunk said about the man befriending the goose too. These animals are very innocent and don't operate the way a lot of people do. I am just glad there are people like you and the others who are so kind to these creatures.

I don't doubt that people cause a lot of it. I see them being chased and kids love to chase the ducks as well or try to catch them. Unfortunately most people, myself included, don't ever see the nicer side and I think it can start a vicious cycle. People are mean, then they respond to that treatment and it starts all over again. It is great to hear people talk foundly of them. I would love to see more pics too.

I had to teach my grand kids to be respectful of the geese and ducks and chickens, I think it's just kids being kids that want to run and chase but they have to be taught that is not nice ducks hurt their legs being chased and geese too plus then a goose bites a child and of course it's the gooses fault . My gander loves my grand daughter she is now 14 and she is calm around him. But when they were small around him I had to watch them and him. My gander bit me on the upper lip once and it looked like someone had hit me with a 2X4 it was not pretty. My fault I didn't take into consideration how long they can stretch their necks.

The Canada geese here are actually pretty friendly, mating season excepted. Besides...after fostering lil' Chub-Chub, I can't view canadian geese as anything but adorable. Same goes for bar-headed geese. I mean, look at this!

I wish I had goose selfies ;;

Okay, not a SELFIE-selfie, but that's 2-day old Wobbles being held by my husband. I miss the days when he fit in our palms like this!
