Selling a home (w/chickens)?

On the tv show Sell This House, the real estate agents usually make the people put away all personal items and keep pets and all signs of pets out of sight. Anything that reflects personal taste or interests is usually hidden away. One guy had an amazing back yard including really nice, expensive tiki torches. The agent told him to get rid of them because they were trying to create a certain image. As much as I might disagree with them, they are in the business of selling houses. I think they'd say get rid of the chickens until the house is sold, and possibly the coop itself unless can be multi-functional. Now...if *I* looked at a house with a chicken coop, I'd just think, cool, one less thing for me to have to do when I move in, especially if it was a really nice, cute one! Then again...I'm not like most normal people lol

Great topic. I have been wondering the same thing myself because we would like to buy a place with a little more land soon. I was thinking we would have to move the chickens somewhere else first. I need to think more outside the box and look for chicken folks! Duh!

(Fortunately?), we only have 7 chickens and so they don't take up all that much space. I think we can make it look sweet and homey for a showing with fresh straw in the run and fresh paint on the outside - their big yard can be moved/taken down, so it won't look like we're overrun!

You might want to be sure your listing agent puts in your listing that they are there and their coop/run can stay with the house or you can take it with you. THis way, the potential buyers are aware they are on the property but that if they purchase it, at their request, the coop/run can be "gone" when they move in.

I would put some kind of sign on the coop stating your intentions for the chickens post-sale. Something like, "Buyer Bonus: free eggs and entertainment", "Chickens and coop negotiable as part of home sale", or "Our pets make us breakfast and can't wait to relocate with us". Be clear in what you want to do with the chickens & coop.

When our next door neighbors were trying to sell their house, we were remodeling the bathroom that faces their back porch. We put up a sign that said, "Pardon our mess, we're remodeling". We didn't want to hurt their sale.

Best wishes for a successful sale & move!
