I recently had an idea of buying hyline brown chicks from a hatchery and selling them in my area. I have researched and I would be the only one selling them in my area and have also heard of people going miles to another person selling them. I have bought feeders, drinkers, bedding & wire, but I am clued on a heat source. One other person selling the chicks has a wooden box setup with one 50w bulb in his garage and he has had up to 200 before in his brooder.

If anyone could give me advice/experience with heat sources and selling chicks that would be great.

I use hot water bottles, as we are on alternative power. They work like a charm, although you'll have to replace the water every four or so hours.

Sounds like a great idea! however, I want it to be a part-time small business. I see you are from a few hours away from where I live, do you sell chicks over there?

I set up a normal light bulb. you can get the wire, and socket, and electrical plug pretty cheap at kent or really any home building store. If you want a lot of birds just set up more than one light. The biggest thing would be making sure its high enough they arent touching it and its secure enough it wont fall and start a fire.

we don't sell chicks, at the moment, (have no rooster) however I have used the hot water bottles for various ducklings (silver appleyards, cayugas, muscovies and more. I am currently using it to brood my three baby button quail. I'm going to bed now, although I'll probably be awake in a couple of hours... Oh the joys of raising quail.

Thanks, how many bulbs for 100 chicks do you think?
