selling chickens

A couple of possible niche's to consider --- started chicks and/or POL pullets. For these to work you would have to have the ability (and costs) to feed and house the birds to certain benchmarks of age that make them desirable to folks looking for birds. Started chicks are those that have been raised beyond the point of needing the brooder and are ready to go outside - some folks like to skip the brooder stage. POL (Point of Lay) pullets are females that have been brought to around 16+ weeks of age and are near the point where production would begin. These birds are attractive purchases because a) they are beyond the point of "maybe cockerels" for most breeds and b) the new owner is just a few weeks away from getting eggs vs. being a few months away. Each of these types of birds command a higher sales price than the day-old chicks available from feed stores and/or hatcheries (note some hatcheries do offer started and POL birds) - but it will be a matter of sitting down to figure your costs and see if the resulting price point is one that could reasonably be expected to be gotten from the birds at the point of sale or not.

You just can not compete price wise selling supplies. They buy supplies by the container load from China having $1000s tied up in inventory. There just isn't the #s to do it. Where you can do well depending upon where you are is selling hatching eggs, chicks and POL pullets. I do well growing out hatchery pullets to 16-20 weeks. Raising higher quality birds yourself will command higher prices and really the only way to go with eggs. What to do with the cockerels will always be a challenge. You can never recoup your expenses with them so it's never worth growing them out. Another area to develop if you have any building skills is custom coops. There are so many fun eclectic coops out there and many first time BYC owners are willing to shell out decent $$ to own one of them.

If you are looking to specialise, dealing with roosters would be an issue, so it might help to start with rare breeds that are also sexable at birth so it would be easy to manage the roosters. There are plenty of breeds that are desirable and are sexable, white leghorns, cream legbars, welsummers, Blackrock etc.
Also a BYC member called oz has made a business in the Philipenes around chickens, his thread is a fantastic read and it should help you with dos and donts :) :
