selling eggs? do or don't?

To Silkiechicken: Can I assume you raise Silkies? If so do you sell chicks? I'll be looking to get some Silkies in the next year or so and am looking for a local breeder (I am in the Bellingham area.) Thanks.

Biretta, I am not a breeder of silkies per se so don't have any fancy show quality birds you may be looking for. I do have a pair black silkies though that are pet quality (parents from the feed store). I breed thoes and hatch them every once in a while. I actually have gotten a miraculous 100% hatch rate out of my pair! I incubated one egg and it hatched, then incubated two and they both hatched, and then incubated three and all three hatched! Now I have 6 babies that are between 2 and 5 weeks old

Three are black and three are mixed with a silkie who had golden streaks that I no longer have. I am in South Everett so I'd be quite the drive to get to. I'd be willing to sell you two or three of the youngest ones of your choice for $3 each if you want to make the drive. They are skittish though because I've not had the time to play with them since the quarter started.

Driving wouldn't be an issue, as before I moved up here, I'd drive from Seattle/Bellevue to Blaine every weekend! Although it will be a while before I get anymore chickens as I have 5 now and no room for more. But in the next year or so, I'll be moving onto 10 acres if all goes well so will be looking to add on. If it's okay, I'll contact you then and see if you have any available. I was mainly looking for white or buff, but I may just have to be flexible!

Thanks.

My wife works at a convalesant home and all the staff buys eggs from her. We pay for all the chicken feed doing this. I have a LOT of chickens and never enough eggs. Some of the Asain nurses will buy 5 or 6 dozen per day. Most want brown but will take any color. They need to be colected daily and clean. At $ 2.50 a dozen I can never have enough. Since my grand daughter left all the yards open there are no eggs for sale and the staff are mad. All will pick up as soon as the eggs they are setting on hatch.

Five or six dozen? That's a lot of eggs. Are you making a profit or breaking even? How many layers do you have?

Sometimes I worry because it is such a litigious society but I try to sell to people I know / trust first and also make sure I tell them to practice sanitary conditions and to thoroughly cook the eggs (same instructions you'd see on meat, etc.)

Is anyone familiar with regulations of selling eggs from a backyard flock in MA.? I looked on the MA. Agriculture but the regs seem to be very unclear for a backyarder. thanks erinm

Wow, was I surprised today. I sent out a company-wide email saying I had some extra eggs each week, made it cute and sent pictures of all the girls. You should have seen the people lined up with money in their hands at my office this morning. I've sold all the eggs for the next two weeks with a waiting list for people who didn't bring money today. All the eggs sold for $3/dozen or $5 for 2 dozen, and several people want eggs weekly.

I had no idea it would take off like that. If it remains steady, the money will cover the cost of feed and maintenance for my babies. Wahoo!

The girls began laying their first eggs on June 19, so it has been nearly a month. At least 9 of the 12 gals are getting with the program now. I've already given away and eaten 7 dozen eggs and sold 9 more dozen this morning.

I love it!
