Hi Guys,

Ok I am getting way ahead of myself here but I have a crazy question.

We have our first batch of chicks coming Monday, as well 2 roosters. So now that we have the roosters will all our eggs be fertile eggs? And if we decide to sell eggs, is it ok to have the rooster there, or should there be no rooster for the eggs we plan to eat and sell? I am a bit confused on how all this rooster egg fertile thing goes. ;-)

yes if you have roosters more then likely your eggs will be fertile. As far as selling them to eat it shouldn't matter
I give away and sell and eat fertile eggs all the time no one seems to have a problem with them.

Yup I eat my fertile eggs all the time. They look pretty much identical to non-fertile eggs and taste exacly the same. As long as you are collecting them every day, you have no worries.

None of my customers have ever asked me if the eggs were fertile. You need a pretty trained eye to see the differance. Plus, stores sell fertile eggs. I just wouldn't make an issue of it.

More than likely all your hens are getting covered... My husband was helping me the other day and I'm chattering away and I noticed he wasn't paying attaention to me.. He was looking off to the Chicken run.. I said.."what's up?" he said.. "Durn, that black roo has bred about 5 hens in 5 minutes and he hasn't even touched the ground.. He just walks from one back to the other.. I watched for a few minutes and sure enough.. my hens were close enough that he got about 10 of them in a row and never touched the ground.. My husband then said.. "When is he going to pass out?"

I sell eggs to people and have never been asked. We live in a farming community so it's no big deal. However, every once in a while i have ran into someone that thought you had to have a rooster or your hens wouldn't lay eggs.

That always cracks me up.

Thanks for the help guys and gals. :) So as long as they go in the fridge the same day we are good to go. Do you guys use those egg candle things, or is that for another use?

As you can tell I am quite noob at this stuff. :)

Milezone

You only have to candle if you are incubating so nope, don't need to get one of those if you are just selling and eating eggs. But you know, since you do have a rooster, you could always incubate some of them. Hint, hint come on over to the dark side!
