Selling eggs- people not paying for eggs

Was just wondering if anyone was having the same problem I’ve been having selling eggs.

Ive been selling eggs by the side of the road last year and this year. Last year was going great, selling dozens every week. I have a small container for the customers to put the money in. My sign was clearly marked $4 for eggs. One day I go out and see someone has taken the eggs but put no money… I try again the next day, same result. Someone was taking the eggs without paying. I had to stop putting the eggs out by the road.

A new year comes and the chickens are back into laying. I try again to sell by the road. My sign clearly says $5/dozen. I put 4 dozen out to sell… see 2 dozen have sold and I go get the money. There was only $5 instead of $10. I’ve put the eggs out to sell again… I’m not sure what to do at this point if someone keeps taking the eggs without paying for them. If this happens the next few times I put them out to sell I’ll have to stop selling by the road again.

Has anyone come across a problem like this? It’s very discouraging
Try to get one of those fake security cameras and put it up close to where you’re selling the eggs. Close enough to where they can spot it too. Wouldn’t mind putting a sign up that says “smile you’re on camera” 🤷

There is/was a person on BYC that had eggs out and a money box on the honor system and someone was stealing eggs and money. She(I think) put up a camera and caught images of the perpetrator and then posted them with the eggs. The person stopped learning he had been identified. Or at least that’s what I remember. If I find the thread I’ll post it.

Alternatively if you don’t want to sell eggs anymore, see if a local food bank or maybe church will take eggs. It varies according to local law, though. That’s what I do with all my extras - local food pantry!

Well could it be they need them? I tried this last yr but I don't get enough traffic I made mine an honor box & didn't put a price, kinda like the food pantry thing..I just put a nice note stating donate what you feel is fair or take what you need

It’s possible they need the eggs but don’t have the money for them. I thought maybe it was a language barrier where someone didn’t understand that they needed to pay for the eggs. I’d rather think that than otherwise. Again, so far no one has taken any more eggs without paying for them but I’m still expecting it.

Wow your eggs are expensive! Maybe why people are stealing or not paying for them which is wrong although they could go to the local market snd buy them ?1.50
Last year I sold them for $4 and it seemed to go fine. This year I thought why not try to sell for $5 and see what happens. I haven’t had any problems selling them for that amount. The price around here varies… some sell for $3 a dozen and upwards. And with rising feed costs the $5 makes up for it🙂
