Selling scrap metal????

Be sure what kind of metal you have before you give it away, some metals bring alot of money in small amounts. There are parts on engines and so forth that do too.

If you separate the metals it is worth a lot of money. It does take some time though. Not sure of the prices in Mass., but in Fl. it's worth the time. It would be easier if you had a truck.

Maybe post on Craigslist for someone to split the cost with you, if you help load and they haul.

For us, we just give all scrap to a friend who doesn't have much money, but always helps us out. It gives him extra cash, and we don't have to deal with the hassle of loading and hauling.

It's worth it here if you sort it. Brass, copper, ect. Box springs from mattresses with the stuffing ripped off. Aluminum and steel is always good.

It's SO worth it apparently, that people will break into foreclosed houses and steal the copper pipes and brass door knobs from older homes. Or the brass flower urns at cemeteries. Continual running adds for "scrap wanted". It takes about 5 minutes to find someone to come get it. Or have it stolen. My brother always has scrap from his work, and they'll cut through the chainlink security fence to get it. And take the section of fence they cut out! Because of all the theft, you have to show some ID when you sell it, and they look for things like large amounts of pipe.

We've made several hundred just from goofy things. FIL made several hundred from cleaning out his garage. My dad too, he had a pile of car parts.

Just a few weeks ago two two yahoo's broke into a building in a nearby town to steel copper, they got on the roof and one was trying to cut some wire off a transformer on the roof and was electrocuted. Then last summer down in indy some guy broke into the gleeners food bank and stole all the copper pipe that went to the freezers,it was over memorial day weekend i believe and it went all weekend without being noticed, they lost a couple tons of meat and other perishable foods.

Last time hauled aluminum it was .69 lb. I think that is almost 3 cents for each aluminum can.
The first of the month I was paid .06 and .10 lb for steel.
I've always just given scrap away, trying to clean up the shop. Lately I've been surprised at what you might get for it. Same with cardboard. Just want it gone.

Scrap metals = cash money.

At one point, we went as far to have a standing order
at the auto auction....I would pay a flat $100 for any
car, in any condition. (This was 4-5 years ago) You would
be suprised at how many cars I actually bought.

All I had to do to double my money was haul them home.
And I had that done. Some parts were removed and sold,
most was pure scrap. Rather than take my time dismatling
the cars, they were sold intact to a junk yard, who in their
turn sold the parts they could before crushing the car.

I'll even go to a sale with the sole purpose of seeing what
can be bought cheap and resold. It can be almost anything.
A game to me.

Bought some old semi-truck cabs once...$50.00 each. Hauled
them home, separated the different metal and sold them...clearing
just over $900.00 a cab.

So scrap does pay.

Dad had several junk battries...someone climed his fence, took them.
Current price here on junk car batterys? $10.00 each.
