Separating drake/mating questions-Pekin

Does he/yours gets conjugal visits? If so how often?

My Drake Casanova and Fabio are with all the Hens all the time...Soon I will separate my Breeding Hens in with the Drakes I want Ducklings from...Then the games begin...Drakes never contact each other...I will free range all The Hens or let each pen out at different times...

Sorry for all the questions......as you know I have to separate my two because of my not good ratio- were as you are separating your two drakes from each other with their own set of girls.

Do I give her a couple of weeks to heal, rest...get her feathers looking good again. After that then once a day let them do their thing while I clean the pens? Then put them back in separate pens.....until I can get more hens.

Yes....That sounds like a great plan..I sure don't mind your questions...I asked so many questions and made great friends here in my area just by contacting Duck people..I used to sell Ducklings for a couple of years before I ever had my own..Old lady up North would bring them in..I imprinted 3 to me after a surgery I had and then was hooked...lol...

I know Why Casanova I'd being mean to Fabio...He is trying to steal Fabios sister Apple. she is only 4months and not sexually mature yet so hides with Fabio her hatch mate....Oh the drama....Lol..

Sorry to respond late as I was one of those Thanksgiving Black Friday nuts!!

Do they mainly mate in the water and how often do you see them mate outside of the water? I see my drake mate my one hen who is just shy of 6 months old. Isn’t very often but they rarely get in the water together. Is it possible to remove their pool and see if that helps? It might make it less easy for him to catch her and pin her down. That might be an easy try before rearranging everything in your pens to keep them separate.

I had a boy duck (not Timber a diff boy duck) he used to get friendly with my chicken hens, mostly wanted one. I got a girl duck, the guy who gave her to me said her name was "Debby". The boy duck would try and drown Debby, and finally he got his own pen. Luckily boy ducks don't make alot of noise when they quack, it is the girl ducks that sound like an unclassy neighbor lady laughing, loudly...

Ok I'm feeling terribly lucky. My alpha drake is a complete gentleman and knows how to fight well enough to keep the other boys in check. I have watched "his" girls. Tell him "No, not right now" and he just walks away. 5 minutes later she walks over to him they "kiss" for a minute and he walks her over the the pond. Lol

I'm so sorry for everyone's troubles. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just tell them how they should behave for us to feel good about it.

That being said what is a "good" ratio for ducks?. They are so much more group oriented and tolerant then my chickens. I got rid of 3 drakes out of simplicity and financial reasons. I know before that I had 100% fertile eggs because I looked 1 day as I was baking and of the 18 duck eggs I cracked 18 had bulls eyes. Even the double yolks I get consistently from my 1 Peking. I have 9 females and 2 males now.

One thing that is funny about ducks, they are uncouth when it comes to eating in front of chickens. Chickens run up to the food and delicately start to peck. A duck runs up to food and gobbles it up talking with their mouths open and telling everyone to "dig in!"
