September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Oh nice thanks. And welcome to the September hatch a long. I contacted the seller and he said it's a throwback wheaten Marans and he normally gets 1 in 50. So weird I have two in 18. And they look different from each other. I think maybe the light yellow is a splash and the yellow with black markings is a wheaten but I'm not sure.

There are no eggs here and nothing like a good hatch to make you itch for another. So I decided to try the store bought eggs. I got 3 dozen fertile eggs from Whole Foods. The Julian date is 243 which I believe is 8/31. I set them today (9/8) so they've been refrigerated for about 9 or 10 days. So I'm not optimistic. But even a few chicks would be cool. They are brown. I'm assuming Rhode Island Reds? Anyone have any advice?

I just did a dozen from trader joes, set 11 days after the Julian date. 5 made it into lockdown, 2 hatched but took their sweet time hatching on day 23 and 24. They actually surpassed my expectations since they'd been refrigerated so long. I hope to try this again so I'll be interested to hear how yours goes.

Oh no! Have your temps been low?
It dropped to 98 a couple times but has been at 99 most of the time.

Hmmm. Mine actually never go to day 21. Are you sure they are alive?
hope so

but it occurred to me that its been exactly 21 days since they'd were placed, but that's only 20 days of incubation. They were OK when I put them into lockdown. Well, I won't give up yet at least

Day 14 here. Had to turn the bator down a touch, they are starting to create a little heat on their own. Out of 8 eggs I think I have 7 that look good. 1 looks off. I will candle again on day 18 to make sure.

AND I candled my Ayam Cemani eggs and 11 eggs of the 15 look like this(pic)!!! Whoohoo!!!
Those are the awesome black chickens! I love those! So, I'm restarting setting 10 shipped Serama eggs because the others just didn't develop other than the two
Hope this hatch does a whole lot better for you! Good Luck!
HELP ME PLEASE!!! Ok I know I'm in the wrong thread but you are my friends and y'all are so so intelligent and knowledgeable. I just noticed that my black australorp,Wilson(who is raising three chicks),has an eye issue. Her right eye is swollen shut. And all around it is super swollen. I gently, with clean hands, opened the lid to see if her eye was actually gone,or still in there. Thankfully,it is inside and looks good. But when I opened it,a bit of clear liquid and puss is in there. Also I saw like a pus blob? Idk if it's actually something else that causing her irritation. Or if this is the result of an infection. I believe she's also got a bit of pus coming from her nostrils. It's dry but yellow. This is all recent!!!!! Help me help her! And protect the flock. I've got an antibiotic on hand labeled:Oxytetracycline HCI. Soluable powder. I've also got some penicillin capsules. For human use. I have a feed store very close if I need to get anything else. Opens tomorrow. Should I try a warm compress too? To help soothe, relieve pain, discomfort and itching??? Oh if I'd just stop typing and send this thing I'd get some awesome help and stop being a worry wart mama!!!!!! Oh God please protect my baby.
Wilson has a sinus infection. Wild birds shed the germs when the visit the feeders and waters shared by the chickens. Can't say for sure that birds that survive become carriers. I usually have one or two cases a year, but I have over 50 adult chickens and often 100 juveniles each year. The watery eye and nasal discharge are the first symptoms, then the pus closes the eye and accumulates under the lids. A chicken actually has two sets of eyelids. So it is difficult to get the gunk out. It can attach to the eye and cause blindness in the eye. A chicken cannot blow it's nose. It is contagious. Both by sneezing and scratching the eye and then by sleeping with the head under her wing, she can shed the germs to those who sleep near her. Breathing will become labored and the sinus will swell around the eye and inside the mouth similar to tonsils in humans. I have also learned how to surgically open the bulging sinus under the eye and clean out the accumulation. Saline and Neosporin helps. When I find a bird that is beginning to show symptoms, I isolate the bird and begin giving FishBiotics Cephalexin. If the bird can swallow, I give the gelcap after dipping it in water to make it slippery and massage the throat to get the pil into the crop. If not, then I open the gelcap, mix the dry powder in a little water and use a syringe without a needle to drip the mixture in the birds mouth. The pills are 250 mg. A Bantam gets one pill a day, while a large bird like an Australorp can take two...in separate doses. It usually takes 3 to 5 days of doses to help get the bird over it. Make sure the bird has plenty of water and food...I give medicated broiler starter with some cracked corn. You may actually need to give her water thru the syringe and make little soft pellets of feed and feed her by hand. When the bird is improving, I offer a little yogurt to help improve the gut. In the meantime, you will definitely want to treat the rest of Wilson's flock mates. Wazine in the water is helpful. I prefer Denagard or Gallimycin. Also, Oxytetracycline can be offered as an alternative. Years ago I actually had a Cochin rooster who had surgery to remove the hardened cottage cheese accumulation. Popeye lost his sight in the eye, but lived a productive life.
Thank you greatly for your very detailed response. I appreciate every bit of help and knowledge I can obtain. So today when I checked in on her,she had slightly opened her eye and there was no puss. Thank you Lord. Just a little bit of clear liquid. It's still very swollen and hot around the eye area. Her nose has a bit of clear discharge as well. I went to my feed store and purchased Terramycin ointment. They did not have an injectable antibiotic specifically for poultry. But I did get, just in case,a vile of penicillin. (Injectable) However, idk if it's safe to administer, what dosage and if it's even necessary. Any idea? I still need to give her an antibiotic right? To fight the internal infection in her sinuses. Ok so again, will the penicillin work? I have another feed store close. In fact,I'll be by it tomorrow. She did very well today. They also didn't have a salt solution for rinsing of the eye. So I made up a lukewarm water plus salt mix. I gently rinsed out her eye using a plastic syringe. Then,I applied a thin strip of the ointment and gently massaged in and also a dab around the outer part of her eye area. She did so good. I could tell that after she realized I wasn't trying to murder her,she appreciated my concern and help. Oh I love her. Ok so go ahead and add the soluble antibiotic to the entire flocks water or just her babies? They've all been within the same roosting area. But her chicks nestle with her the closest. Thank you again for your caring heart.

Glory, read this thread, I love, love ...Dawg53, and I was thinking about the Tylon...do what he suggests...he knows his stuff!

Here's what I do..twice a yr. I have what's called Denagard. It is a huge bottle, but I've shared with friends, and it goes a long way. I just treat my flocks water in the spring and the fall. Sick or not. You will have some say..why treat when they are not sick. Dawg suggested it yrs. ago, I have been doing it since, I have not had an upper respiratory for yrs now. And, you can eat the eggs..no waiting a few weeks like you have to when you use the other things. Of course, at this point, you need a good strong something for your bird, and you probably can't find Denagard anywhere but the net. Will find a site where they sell it.

You know what? I actually agree with you on treatment, at least annually, sick or not. That is what we do with our cats and goats. Well we vaccinate and deworm. Worms or not. I've heard people argue the other point, opinion noted, respect granted, disagreement settled. Everyone is different. And ultimately, the choice is ours. I think I should treat the flock just so that they don't get it. Or if some already have it,it doesn't progress into a full blown nasty infection. Thank you Cynthia!!! Such a dear!

Oh so do you think the Denegard is stronger than the Oxytetracycline? Hmmmmm how long would it take to get here. I'm old fashioned....I don't use CC's. I do have an emergency loadable card though. For things like this. I know right? I don't do bank accounts either! I don't use any social media like FB...this is the socialist thing I do involving the internet. :old: :caf

Here is my chick who doesn't have a name yet 1 of 3 eggs set in the brinsea she hatched on 8/31.
I found my duck egg pipped in the brinsea dried out :(. I think I will leave that one to just chick eggs.
My farm innovators has 21 eggs on Thursday will candle them and take the turner out as we will go into lock down.
In the little giant we set 12 duck eggs 2 moved to brinsea for lock down 10 were clear or didn't make it to the lock down stage.
Second turn we set 15 duck eggs in the little giant so far 4 have exploded :(. 11 were clear today 3 have good veining/movement and 1 is iffy.
Today we set 7 chick eggs in the brinsea. I know, I'm crazy. Lol

Yay!!! I'm horrible at sexing.....do you know the sex? I have a few ideas on names. I usually choose unisex names. Or idk maybe you don't want any help.....

I would go with what is near by for now. I just have this Denagard on hand all the time now. In fact, it will be time to treat my flock again by the end of this month. :)
Good for you, no FB! Maybe a friend can get it for you..you give them the money, the order?
