September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

All of my eggs except one have pipped! The one that had pipped yesterday while still in the egg turner has made no more movement. I do, however, have a new chick!

Just wanted to share the good news: Out of 29 eggs from lockdown, I have 20 chicks!

1 of the remaining eggs has pipped mightily but does not look like it will be successful without intervention (no zipping). The other 8 have no real signs of pipping or have pipped only a tiny bit with no other movement. Today (about 30 minutes ago) is day 21. Should I wait for the other 9 eggs or just let the 20 chicks dry off and end the incubation? (One or two started pipping early on day 19 with two hatching right before Day 20).

I started w 35 Delaware eggs from local breeder but only 29 made it to lockdown.

Been fun watching this Sept hatch thread. If anyone has advice about ending incubation or waiting for remaining 9 eggs please let me know!

Thanks!

I would give the ones that have not hatched a few more days as you are only just hiring day 21.
Good luck.

Today is day 7 of my 6 la bresse eggs. After candling, only 2 were developing, so disappointing. I know shipped eggs are not the best but it was the only way to get this particular breed.
As I suspected from days ago that most weren't developing, I ordered another 6, 1 arrived smashed, and the 5 ok ones went into the incubator late last night. I hope that out of these at least a few hatch.

Thanks much Marlene! Im guessing I should take the 20 chicks out? It is almost impossible to keep the heat and humidity stable in that little styrofoam incubator with 20 chicks flopped all over the place.

e have another 2 little ones out of the shells! Around 4-5 p.m. I went into the coop and saw one of Henrietta's eggs open (Henrietta is one of th ehens whose eggs were adopted and brooded by Mima the silkie mama hen). Henrietta is all black with a gold laced hackle necklace, appears to be americauna/EE ,ix (though she lays light brown medium size eggs). That chick is black bodied with a huge cute white butt, no white spot on the (her?) head.
The next egg to hatch right after, it had to have been, the 2nd, looked to be another Henrietta egg. I held the chick for one or two seconds but put it back quickly too. It was still wet and adorably sticky ;-) Black and white coloring that may be more speckly but hard to tell with the sticky hairdo.
After that it was too dark outside to be able to see anything which I'm sure Mima appreciated, lol.
So I "tucked them in" (left them alone) for the night. I hope to be up around sunrise to see who has gotten out of eggs and who is still trying. Of the 9 eggs that felt to have chicks in them (not the light weight one), I've seen 3 chicks. I hope we have 6 more beauties to be coming out of eggs into the world under the mama hen!
As of 8 or 9 a.m. I saw 5 little cuties: one white leghorn, one silkie and 3 Henrietta X Creamy Roo. Those are 1) black body with white butt 2) black and white speckled, 3) majority black with 1/3 white.
Since Mima (silkie broody) laid one more egg and I added one ech from Henrietta and Snow White up thru thursday at 4-5 p.m. 21 days ago, I will return and check on the nest around that same ime this afternoon and by then declare a "full count".
Here are the new arrivals so far, pics from my check this morning...#1=silkie

#2=leghorn

#3, #4, #5=Henrietta x Creamy Roo

Thanks! The last one just hatched... so I got 21 out of 29 from lockdown! I live out in the country and have serious predator problems. I probably lost 15 chickens in two weasel attacks alone this summer not to mention one or two disappearing while free-ranging during the day from my local fox and a few chicks to rats. I was left with only 8 layers (and one of those has been broody for months now) so I realized that I needed to up my chicken count dramatically if I could expect to lose chickens like that each year!

Locking down a day early for the bantams. Had internal piping on day 18 with the last hatch. Figure early lock down wont hurt the remaining la bresse.

Really disappointed with this hatch so far. I was exited to try the La bresse, but right off the bat ended up with problems. I'm down to 3 la bresse eggs all from the same girl. Lost 3 to bacteria I think entered from cracking by the toddler, 3 were infertile from the start and another 3 had D.I.S with bacteria really bad. Cracked two open today that just quit within the last day or so, lots of long whitish green ropes of bacteria. Wasn't able to get good pictures but I am wondering why they ended up infected so bad. The smell and growth was pretty far along for chicks that just passed. ( these chicks where moving 48hrs ago) I'm wondering if its something that the hens passed along since the only eggs left are all from the same girl and one of her's is cracked but still going strong.

I have 3 funky air celled serama eggs left. All are moving and making their air cells bounce. It shouldn't be long for these guys.
