***SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

well.... I am on day one of lockdown..... candled the eggs right before lockdown and had two duckies in the air cells and one with an external pip. I am worried because their entire eggs arent blacked out.... ech.... I hope it will be okay, I started with 16 and only have 3 going into lockdown.... this is my first duck hatch though.

I always put a snuggle-Mama in my brooders. I shop Goodwill or other thrift shops for washable fuzzy buds. I HAVE discovered that once my babies adopt a mama [even if they chose the painted bluebird on the thermometer] They stick with the original. I leave 'Mama' in with them until they go to the grow-out coop. I just toss the dirty 'Mama' into the wash with other pet bedding after a 'soak and spin'.

Woke up this morning to more chicks! I just can't believe this .... There is one almost out of the egg, one more pipping and the other 2 may just surprise me after all! I have already apologized to the seller because I had told her they weren't progressing! These Marans eggs are tricky to candle that's for sure! I think I'm going to order the ovascope from Brinsea so I don't make this mistake again.

Here are this morning's photos:

And the eggs these hatch from (my photo with my regular brown egg didn't work well due to the lighting, but there was a big difference)

I use tiolet paper and paper towel rolls in with my quail. They love to play and sleep in them. I never put anything for them to huddle up against because they always pile around each other anyway.

I use that rubber-like shelving material that sells for a buck at the dollar store in the bottom of my hatcher so hey have a softer place. When theyhatch they tend to drg their hinies along on the wire and it sometimes makes them bleed. I actually had one pull their intestines out because their cord came out of the egg but they stayed in one place long enough for it to dry o the wire and when it moved to detach itself it pulled it's intestines out because the cord was stuck. It was pretty grusome and horrible to see, so I started using that shelving stuff and no more incidents. And it's washable. I toss it in with the whites and it gets washed and bleached. Ready again for use. I do have to use a couple of pieces to cover the floor but it works.
