***SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Congrats on all the babies everyone!! Ok now I am up to 10 silkie babies. My blk splits still haven't hatched yet. I am still hoping.
I have a little buff silkie that hatched from one of Bobbi Porto's 'Tater' (her buff silkie) eggs. I don't know why but when he hatched, his umbilical cord started bleeding alot and he dragged the egg shell around the bator on top of all the other eggs. Now there are blood smeared eggs all over the place. It looks like a murder occurred in there. I took him out and checked his tummy but it luckily had already stopped bleeding already. He slept in the bator all night and he is in with the others in the brooder this morning he is such a little cutie. His name is gonna be Tater Tot. He looks like one too lol. I'm gonna try and post some pics later today.

Those are some beautiful chickens. One of my faves of the LF breeds. I love big-bodied hens that lay nice eggs.....My boyfriend and his dad have made me promise to keep the coop-building at a minimum for a bit. At least til after deer season, lol. All I can tell 'em is they better be ready, because I plan on adding some Wyandottes, Plymouth Rocks, Ameraucaunas to our collection. I wonder if I can get away with Orps, too??? Hmmmmm...

Good luck with your Orp eggs, and I wanna see pics....

I don't know much about the genetics, but I just figured blue orps were derived from the whites, buffs, and blacks somehow....I have no idea. I just know they're all gorgeous.....haven't seen any white ones next to blues to give me anything for comparison. I'm gonna go searching and see what I can find, you've got me all curious now, lol.

I know its October but to heck with it,
I just had 6 BCM X Blue marans hatch, 1 silkie, and 2 more Marans as well as 2 frizzles and a silkie working their way out.
And not a single Lav Araucana, but I've got another batch to hopefully make up for my loss.
so 14 more marans eggs, 16 more Lav araucanas, and another 6 marans eggs due to hatch this month..... What have I done?

What is that you use for bedding. Looks like wood chips and sand maybe? I really need a different way to do this. Right now i'm using paper towel and I have to change it twice a day. I was using just wood chips but I still had to change that once a day. The quail are messy little suckers. They could use more space but I don't have it. They are growing fast. My plan was to get them in the freezer before I ran out of room but the Bob Whites hatched first because the others where just chicks when I got them. I was hatching quail while the others where maturing and the first batch where infertile. But now they aren't infertile. I have 4 batches of Bob Whites and the first just turned 7 weeks. My first batch of cortunix are just almost a week old. My grower pen is full of Bob Whites. And now I have all these cortunix. I have 3 brooders with 2 being used. I need to move the 6 chicks to a smaller brooder so I can use it for the quail.

Just thinking out loud. lol

I just use pine shavings the pic was taken just before I cleaned their brooder. What you see is the mess they made with their starter feed
