***SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

YES! You get to participate in the September AND October Hatch-a-Longs!

My first time hatching was just a couple months ago - 7 olive egger eggs from Wynette, too! (Excellent wrapping job for shipping; I was afraid I'd smash an egg just trying to get each one out of its bubble wrap!) 6 hatched, 1 drowned in the water reservoir

but I have 5 healthy, happy and active chicks from that hatching. I didn't candle that batch, because I had no clue what to look for AND I didn't want to discover any early disappointments. I totally believed I would do something wrong and none of 'em would hatch.

It was SO amazing when they started to peep from inside the eggs, then pipped, then zipped, then hatched. Such a magical event with each one.

I have since hatched two more sets of eggs, 3 each of 7 eggs, plus I have another set in the incubator right now. I even candle the eggs now, big ol' brave me. (Six of the 7 eggs show development right now! Due to hatch on Sept. 24th.)

Welcome aboard!

Linda, thanks for the welcome.

I have been lurking here at BYC for weeks and reading trying to learn alot. Since I didn't know anything about chickens when I started it really helps to have a place like this which is full of information.

Yes, Wynette sure does pack well and they are such beautiful eggs. I really hope I do well with the hatching. Sounds like you really jumped right in and enjoy hatching as you already on your fourth hatch. I read that hatching gets adictive and that its lots of fun. Right now I just worry if I am doing everything correctly.

Welcome Newyorkrita! Good luck with your first hatch. My first hatch was very disapointing but the folk on this site were really supportive and I've learned a lot. I now have 16 chickens, 15 that I've hatched myself (6 are 18 weeks, 3 are 16 weeks and 5 are 14 weeks old) and I have 18 silkie eggs due to hatch this week. It can be very addictive!

Still in lock down, last night nothing, but this morning I awoke to two hatched, two pipped and the other two just sitting. I've got to keep my hands away from the incubator. So exciting. The booder box is ready, just awaiting the others to come into the world.

Hi and welcome Newyorkrita!! Hope you have a great hatch! If I candle eggs I usually candle at 10 days(can usually tell by then what aren't developing), 14 days sometimes if I just want to see them wiggle, and on day 18 when they go into lockdown.
Update on my waiting, and waiting, and...
Had to take my broodies eggs from her because she left them for a fresher batch. She doesn't have those anymore either as I took them and put fake eggs under her. Hoping she'll accept the babies after they hatch as 5 of her 6 were still moving even though they got completely cooled from her leaving them. So I added them to my little bator that was already crowded. Didn't have the heart to toss them, plus they should be hatching really soon.
My one game mix egg looks like it will be hatching in the next couple of days. It has filled the egg and looks to be trying to get ready.
The 4 Silkie eggs I have left out of 12 are still wiggling and will go into lockdown on Tue since my temp ran around 100-101 pretty much the whole incubation(just couldn't get it to set right this time. They were all moving at last candling.
The 8 Marans eggs still have another week to go before llockdown.

I know Janjan1 it is so hard to keep away from the bator when they are all still hatching, Im sure most of us have gone ahead and nabbed a few babies out after they are totally dry just because we couldnt stop ourselves even after knowing we shouldnt

I know I still had the other eggs hatch fine but Im sure I made them delay by a few hours.
Featherbaby you never know since I have had 3 out of 4 call duck eggs hatch out of a batch I got shipped to me earlier this year and they are suppose to be one of the hardest to hatch. Most of my hatches have been from 50% to 80%-so I will send some good hatching vibes to you

-I know most people who use hens just wait for most the babies to hatch and then wait for the hen to get off them and then go in and check the eggs. My silkies like to pile up on each other too, its so funny

Ok so put eggs in at 3:30 pm on friday 9-3. That makes hatchday this thursday correct? So I lockdown tomorrow? would you turn the eggs first thing in the morning and then lockdown?

I have my fingers crossed that I will actually get some chicks from this. The kids have been following this process for school and it would be so disappointing to have a 2nd batch do nothing. I have several eggs though that I can see nothing but airsac on. The rest of the egg is dark and no light goes through so I am really really hopeful. We got further with this batch than the last. The last batch did nothing.

HeatherLynn it sounds like they are doing good, sending hatching vibes to you

, I would turn them during the first part of the day and then start your lock down-I think your correct with tomorrow , I set eggs late 9/1 and 9/2 so Im starting my lockdown this evening
