September Hatch-A-Long!

Incubator is back up and running!
Unfortunately, this is the first time eggs I've ordered from different sellers didn't ship exactly when they said they would and I have no choice but to do a staggered hatch.
So fingers crossed I don't lose too many, I've never had to do this before!

This time I'm hatching Exchequer Leghorns & Blue Isbars. Also for fun I got a mixed dozen of true Araucana roosters over Easter Egger Hens & over Barred Rock hens.

A porcelain silkie, the one who's butt broke thru the membrane on day 17, hatched today, 3 days early. It's so tiny.

aren't they fine?? congrats!!
the little one you asked about the frizzled sizzle, is half the size of the silkies! you asked me what the difference is between a sizzle and a frizzled sizzle....I looked it up...it has to do with the frizzle or sizzle markers in the DNA....a frizzled silkie doesn't necessarily have the silkie downy feathers a frizzled sizzle does....either way it's over my head and basic info is all my old brain wants to retain lol

my husband and I decided that this was our last month to hatch until spring....we want everyone to be feathered in and big enough to handle winter, which is basically mild here. I did put an egg from my dark sex link in the other day because her little one drown the other day....but I keep looking at hatching eggs on ebay!!! I can't I just can't!!

Picked up my new (used) Hovabator Genesis today and it works fabulously - can't believe how well it hold temps. I upgraded my Farm Innovator 4200 with an incukit from incubatorwarehouse.com and made it into my official hatcher. Took some serious diddling with settings but now its doing great. Just locked down my 9 mixed rare breed eggs a few hours early

In my new Hovabator I have a large selection of Marans and Leghorn mixes - going for big blue eggers and olive eggers, and 3 Breda eggs - though I am very doubtful one will make it. I discovered after a few days that the air cell was forming in the pointy end due to spiderweb cracks in that end. I sealed it with wax but the vein mass is attached to the very top of the fat end of the egg. And I converted my LG still air with an incukit too and it is currently holding my Bielefelder, Sweet Potato Quechua and Colloncas eggs. I will probably shuffle them around here in a while so I can get my most important eggs into the hovabator.

I hope I am swimming in babies soon!

ugh!!! your killing me!!! I will have to live vicariously through you!!! I hope you have a great hatch!!!

My name is Donna.....and i'm addicted to candling chicken eggs lol

Day 13 in the incubator :) Started with 8 silkie eggs, 1 was not fertile so went in the bin. Got 7 now all wiggling away happily :-D

Started candling at day 3 and now i can't stop :) Its been amazing watching them change so quick. Can't help myself, when i go to turn them over before i go bed i have to take a quick peek inside lol Only plan on candling 1 egg and end up looking through ALL of them just to check if they are all ok :)

Can't wait to see what an internal pip looks like!
Can't wait to see an EXTERNAL pip!
AND can't wait to see my little chicks :)

This is all completely new to me - i don't own any chickens....yet :)
Believe it or not each hatch you will candle a little less but it will always be exciting. I candled every egg, every night on my first hatch. I would say not tonight. Then lie awake in bed wondering and worrying. I'd finally get up at 2 AM to candle one or two, just to be sure they were ok, then I'd candle everyone, sometimes twice. As they got older and harder to see, I started taking them in my closet with the lights off. Then I had to get new batteries for my flashlight. They run down fast and you don't realize it. (My Iphone flash is great for candling.) Then I had to get a new flashlight. Then I had to get more eggs, then I had to get another incubator, more eggs, another incubator, more eggs... But I candle a little less now. Too many eggs to candle every night.
