September Hatch-A-Long!

I forget the time frame on this little one, How long since it pipped? Unfortunately I have become the assist queen as I have had lots of malposition issues with my rare breed eggs. One trick I use with an assist that is getting air already is to coat the membrane in coconut oil (others use antibiotic ointment with NO pain killers in it) It makes the membrane totally translucent and I can easily see when the blood vessels have been fully absorbed so I know how far along the chick is without opening the bator. Remember that from pipping it can take up to 36 hours normally to absorb all the yolk etc. From my experience - if they are going to be OK, they will let you know when they are ready to come out by getting suddenly really chirpy and struggling. I let them try to get out on their own. If they become glued to the membrane by the time they want out I will get them out of the bator and use warm water and q-tips to rehydrate and peel off the membrane. I haven't kept track, but I'd say I've easily done 25 assists in my short hatching career. All that have been perky and chirpy before "hatching" have lived. I have only had a few that didn't make it. The biggest thing is to NOT RUSH. Once they are breathing, there isn't much that waiting can hurt - but plenty that rushing can hurt.

Great advice. Thank you so much. I went ahead and did the coconut oil. I saw its backend in the aircell and I dont think the yolk is all the way absorbed. It is moving and chirping still. Time will tell.

Meanwhile I have Godzilla in there crashing around and rolling eggs like bowling balls. And pecking everything!!!!

I have not reported about my hatch due Monday because I thought I killed them.
And probably did with the exception of one that decided to hatch a little while ago.
It has been crazy here. My sons wife passed away from cancer .............I was busy trying to help him.
I came home the day before lock down to find the temp spiked to 110.I don't know why.
I don't know for how long.
I was going to toss the eggs...I was so upset I really thought I was going to throw up.
Dh convinced me to do lockdown just in case.............Was going to toss them today but had not gotten around to it.
At supper.........I heard a chirp and sure enough.....there was a beautiful WA almost out of it's shell..............
It is perfect, legs OK........everything seems to be in order.....sure hope I get at least one more...................
Have not candled yet but had set 10 the day before the spike so......................

Since my turkey was early, I don't have anything hatching until next Friday. Langshan for me and Bresses for a friend. 3 of 4 Langshans and 4 of 12 Bresses developing. I was hoping my friend's Bresses would do better. My Langshans that hatched a couple weeks ago, are so big now. They visit the other chicks' brooders sometimes. I go in there and have 15 in the one that had 13 and the another one will be down to 11. I go back in the morning and everyone is back in the rightplace. It's not like the giant Langshans can hide in the Mille Fleurs and Bantam Cochins. They all get along. I am still tuned to the emergency cry. I can sleep thru all of the chirps, cheeps and cricket purring but as soon as one cries, I'm up.Early this morning my lone Isbar cried. I went running in and all he wanted was a cuddle.

If it had been later, I wouldn't have minded but it was still dark. So the little guy did chicken chores with me. Only dropped him in poop once, OK, maybe twice. Tough little guy.

Chicken chore buddy.

This is the one trying to hide in my 2 week old Mille Fleurs and Cochins. They are less than half his size.

so sweet...withdrawls already?

For the record, I go against what you are supposed to do and I remove my Godzillas. I had one crazy chick peck open another's shell, and I had one smothering chicks by laying on their pip holes. So I add extra water, boost the humidity and quickly snatch them out to bring to the brooder.

That's what I plan on doing if these eggs ever hatch. Too many risks by keeping them all together, especially if you have some very early and very late hatchers.

Update: We have 23 eggs finished hatching... 3 died.

1 was the 2nd chick of a double yolked egg, 1 from opening a vein, and the other possibly suffocated as the membrane was shrink wrapped over it's body. Otherwise it was perfectly fine. 9 left to go and 2 I'm kinda worried about. The others are making progress as long as they don't get the membrane stuck on them. So 65% thus far, with a potential first time hatch of 93% if the remaining ones survive. That doesn't include the quail from earlier this week.

The house is relatively quiet for a few and no one is zipping so I'm going to nap for a bit before the next go round.

I've already got my eggs for the next hatch, starting tomorrow.
