September Hatch-A-Long

This whole incubator eggs business has me eating way to much chocolate to they and keep me from going crazy. I have a wireless thermometer that I carry around the house with me so I can che.ck the temperature constantly.
I tried to candle and started balling thinking I had killed them all because they all had red veign rings....Then I did some more research and now I think they might be okay...if not I will just try again...after crying for a week.

I'm so jealous...you all have wonderful egg collections. Seeing as I'm getting Fall chicks, it's going to be a LONG wait for Spring! :)

I feel ya on the long wait, but you'll have a collection of wonderful egg pictures too!!!

I know!!! Being able to check the temp constantly is probably not a good idea. You sound like the kind of hatcher that I am.
What day are your eggs on?
There's a thread (I think) search "candling pics" and you should be able to find a thread that has pictures of candling of almost every day. You might check that out.
I hit the chocolate hard when I'm hatching too. I'm looking forward to an incubator with a thermostat and automatic turner, so I don't blow up like a balloon every time I want to hatch eggs. Turning them five times a day and checking the temp and fretting when it gets up around 105 and all that other stuff that goes along with that level of interaction with the eggs...

Waiting for the girls to be done laying then going to start a batch in the incubator.. Got 37 saved so far, we shall see how many I can stuff in there after they are done laying for the day :)

Also looks like I have a hen considering going broody, she was on the nest last evening when I went to do a final egg check, was on it this morning at 6:45 when I went to clean the coop and is still on it now even though there are a dozen hens out there squawking for a nesting spot... Will place dummy eggs under her tonight and give her a couple more days to make sure she is serious.. Sell incubator chicks, keep broody chicks

works for me!!

I'd like to do this!!!

I'd like to do this!!!

It kinda came about unexpected but I think I have another way for my girls to pay for themselves, got someone else interested in me incubating a batch when this one is done

.. Make sure if you do it you only incubate for either people you know and trust or folks who are willing to put half down to ensure they are serious... It would suck if someone backed out with a incubator load..

I just loaded 42 to eggs in the bator and have room for a few more, will go out in an hour or so and see who has laid and which ones I want to add...

That sounds good!!!
A friend of mine incubated a batch of eggs for me early this year. She didn't charge me. I don't think I would charge ppl to incubate eggs for them, but I thought that if I sell the chicks from incubating myself and let a broody hen incorporate chicks from her own brood into the existing flock, then that would be how I think the same idea would work for me.

Wow!!! That's a lot of eggs!!! I just have six chickens laying right now, and the incubator I have is pretty small (and not that good). IDK why I keep putting eggs in it; it doesn't really make sense; well, I guess it makes sense to a committed hatch-a-holic (I mean committed to hatching lol) to give it one more try.

LOL... I doubt I would charge friends or family either...Unless they wanted a ton.... I do charge those who can afford it for eggs tho, $2.50 a dozen, I am not making money but it pays for the feed.

Final count.. 56 eggs placed in, I have little doubt I will have quitters and clears but it would be awesome if I got 40 at least to hatch! :) hatch date is Sept 14th :)

I am so jealous of all you!

You know how many eggs you have, you can candle them and watch over them, all I can do is look for Ethel to come into the building area and bring her feed. I wish I at least knew how many eggs she has.

Yeah, Ethel kind of takes the worry factor out for you, eh? Think of all the spare time you'll have NOT wistfully sitting by the incubator fretting about humidity and temps. Ethel should get a big Thank You.

(Wish I had an Ethel.... me gots no bird taking over my hatching chores)
