September Hatch-A-Long

Did a Day 12 candling.

Pulled 7 eggs, clear or blood rings (no chick development).

I have 3 "iffy" Marans eggs (because they're too dark to really tell, but I am not hopeful with what I see so far)

and 13 alive and kicking.

Of the 13 still with us: 5 legbars, 4 wheaten marans, 3 TJ's, 1 EE (Hang in there, chickies!)

Ok, so final update. 7 of the 8 that made it to day 18 hatched and are in the brooder. The 8th I candled and it seems that it must have quit just before or after lockdown.
Since I just got a bunch of barnyard mix eggs for my first hatch ever I don't know what they are, but I know what crosses they could be and it will be fun guessing as they feather out. There are 5 black chicks and 2 yellow ones. I'LL POST PICS SOON
So in the end 7 of the 14 that I got hatched to give me a 50% hatch rate

You do not understand Chicken Math!

You can never make a blanket statement like this as if it is a absolute!

How many eggs did you start with?

How many did you throw out before day 18?

What was the source of the eggs?

Did they ever travel by mail? Railcar? Airplane? Commercial truck? Or in a personal vehicle?

Did they ever come within 15 feet of a dog?

These question are irrelevant in common math. In chicken math these are the most important aspects.

I understand your confusion, I use to think like you until I spent 2 months following the hatch-alongs and learned the actual chicken math.

I am thinking you could be anywhere from 90% to 204% roughly.

Chicken math has many formulae. That's why it makes perfect sense!

Example: Last hatch I set 40 eggs. 12 hatched. 3 (or 4) were pullets. I was shooting for 10 pullets, which would've happened had, for instance, I had the 50% hatch rate of shipped eggs with 50% of those being female.

So this hatch I set 36 eggs. In an ideal world of assumptions 18 would be viable shipped hatching eggs. Of those hatching I would get either 9 pullets (50/50) or 4 pullets (if the previous experience held true for this hatch) or I would get 8 pullets if the Laws of Inverse Ratios kicked in. (Truth be told, I'd be happy with ANY of these outcomes)

As is, I have 13 eggs headed to lockdown (but we're only on Day 12, so no guarantees). If all goes well the pullet count is either 6, 3 or 9.

BUT I've learned my lesson from the last time of counting my chickens before they hatch....and trying not to. But with chicken math you can rationalize whatever outcome you have or desire.
