I have some young Serama that I was planning on separating into a couple of breeding groups, as the pullets are starting to come into lay. However, my first girl to start laying has been trying intensely to go broody for a couple of weeks, and last night she finally defeated me. The eggs should be fertile, as the girls are in with five cockerals and they are very, erm, active. Fauna's now sitting tight on six eggs, three of her own and three from her flockmate Lily. I was originally going to let her set only four, but her eggs are pretty small and nearly round, and I am unsure of how viable they might be. I threw in another one just to have a backup, and then I thought it wasn't fair to Lily, so in another of hers went, too.

(I'm such a dork...) She's setting in my indoor roo BooBoo's cage, and the funny thing is that she is completely comfortable with him in there. However, I reach in there to give her some feed and she screeches the house down - silly girl. I plan to find BooBoo other lodging well before the chicks arrive, even though he's pretty mellow around babies.

Wish me luck - these are my first homebred Seramas, and I'm really excited...!

I'll keep everyone updated.

Congrats! I have a Serama way, way, gone into the land of broodiness, even though she already tried one batch and they weren't fertile. Best of luck to you and your girl!

LOL@ Bluegrass Yeah, some hardcore breeder I am. These babies will at least know who their mamas are, tho.

So, okay, I wasn't going to candle until day 5, y'know, be good and all that, and then, somehow, there was an egg in one hand and my miniMag in the other... and... it just happened!

Spider!

Of course, could I let the others be after that? Uh... noop. *more

* There are five bitty spiders out of six, and I'm not sure but I thought I saw a faint spidery-lookin' shadow in that sixth one, so we shall see. Go Fauna go!

Ah, day #16 - I CANNOT believe how fast the time is flying this time around! Usually it feels like it crawls while I'm turning.. and turning... and candling... and turning... LOL (Having a broody do the work ROCKS!) Anyhoo, Fauna, at candling yesterday, has six full eggs, most showing some movement. She's such a good girl - I really hope she gets some bebbies after all the hard work she's put in. She never pecks me when I put my hand in her cage, just gives me some commentary and stink-eye, and whenever she comes out to have a stretch she runs over to greet me and tell me all about it. Such a sweetheart.

I soooo wish the DH would let me have some ornamental breeds. Serama would be at the very tip top of my list. Followed closely by a couple of silkies just for entertainment value!

Keeping things crossed for your little Fauna. And of course, posting pictures when they arrive is a MUST DO!!

And soooo tiny - from one of Fauna's eggs. Will have pics in a little while, after baby fluffs out a bit. Other eggs just have small pips, so it'll be a while.

Okay, took me a little longer than anticipated, but as promised - pics!

Mama Fauna - this isn't a great pic of her. She's got the most feminine face of my Serama girls, with huge dark eyes. She looks all tired out - poor thing. She's been working hard.

First baby, out of a Fauna egg.

Wow, check out that baby stink-eye!

Baby 2 (oh, yeah, I forgot to post - second baby is out, a couple of hours ago. LOL) She is out of a Lily egg.

Pips in three of the remaining eggs; still waiting on the last one to pip.

Woke up to two more bebbies - total is now four, with one egg that has a large hole and very active chick inside, and one egg with nothing. Will have pics of new bebbies soon.
