Serama eggs from Castle Delight Seramas

Do you mind sharing with me how you know the two on the right are boys???

yes, combs turning red. Many of my Serama boys have shown red combs at 3 weeks. Of course, some don't show for 4-6 weeks, so you cannot be sure on those. But you can be sure of the ones that are turning red and brighter red with age.

And some days the comb may not be as red as on other days. But once you have seen the red comb, you can be sure it is a male.

Harder to be definite on the pullets. But usually I say pullet for sure when no red has developed in the comb by 7-8 wks. Once in awhile you will get a very late developing male but not often.

Not an exact science by any means but helpful.

This is another reason I really like Seramas. You know early what you got

I have only had one late developer - it was Amadeus. I went back and forth with him till he was about 8 weeks old. He just refused to get that red comb! lol

a little off topic...but my Serama story from today. I currently have seramas from Castle Delight in my bator hatch date Sept 5th. About 3 weeks ago I ordered 4 adult seramas from a local lady who does a lot of selling on BYC. I have them in total quarantine in front garage in cage for next four weeks.

Funny Story...I am a total Serama newbie! Today I take the little roo (gorgeous I might add) out of the transport cage and put by my garden to photograph and he flies up into the tree. I had no idea they could fly like a BIRD! OMG! I started to panic. I was home alone with my 4 year old. I grab a broom and as I take a few steps toward serama he flies across the street (heart beating crazily at this point) and into the soybean field. I chase him around for 45 minutes PRAYING he doesn't get injured or killed. I am hot, sweaty and terrified. I finally get him to hide in the reeds by the ditch and pin him to the side of the ditch with the broom. He is fine (happy in fact) and I am still recovering! Lesson learned!
LOL

Funny but not funny, if you know what I mean! Yes, they can fly

I'm so glad you caught him. I had no idea they could fly either when I first had them a year ago. I couldn't find my two little hens anywhere outside one night. I searched and searched and finally found them roosting on top of the patio umbrella I bought for the run!

I DO know what you mean. It is only funny now that he is safe and sound and secure! I was terrified. I am just hoping no passerby's captured that scene to post on YouTube because I had to look like crazy woman!

I warn everyone who adopts my babies..."they can and will fly!" Dina loves to fly up to the ceiling fan in the office and ride around on it LOL

I can't wait to raise my own!!!

I have 2 hens, one I think is breeding quality, the other I think is really just pet quality and I'm hoping to get a couple more really nice pullets/hens and find a new home for her, even though she cost me a small (to me!) fortune! Of course SHE is the one that has started laying, although she only laid one egg a week+ agp/

Laura,
Finally, I have 1 from Amadeus. But there are still 2 more and the 3 from Napolean, and they are moving. They just don't seem to be in any hurry.
