Serama eggs from Castle Delight Seramas

How many eggs did you start with? I started with several eggs this time and only 4 started to develop at all, then two quit on me early this week I didn't want to open them since they'd started developing--just not ready to see things like that yet! And I candle almost every single day... I have a Brinsea Mini so I can't incubate too many eggs to begin with. I record everything that happens so I like to know exactly which day the embryo quits. I did the same thing with my last hatch. At some point I may try to avoid candling altogether except in the middle of the incubation period and at lockdown just to see if it makes any difference in the outcome. I plan on hatching the rest of my life

I put my eggs in the bator last Thursday evening. So I'm counting Friday as day one? Right? If so, then I'm on day 6. (I couldn't wait to candle, so I candled tonight. I have something in all but two. I put a few of my silkie eggs in to compare. I need a better flashlight/candler to make sure what I'm seeing is developement and not a bloodring, in some. But the two that where clear, had nothing. I cracked one open, and it is definetly clear.)

Having a good flashlight makes a huge difference in your confidence. Luckily my dad and brother are obsessed with small, high-powered flashlights so I've got some on hand (lived on my own for 3 years, but back with mom and dad at age 25

). When the battery starts to run low and I can't see into the egg very well it makes me nervous! But anyway, 13/15 developing is awesome! Do you have a particular variety of silkies in there? I'd like to have a broody silkie or two to hatch my eggs. And cochins... I have a weakness for fluffy chickens.

I'm running to the hardware store for their bestest flashlight. lol My silkies are all stock I've collected from peeps on here. I'm concentrating on BBS, so I have an awsome blue cockeral, over blue and splash hens. I thought I was only ging to do silkies, but then the serama bug hit! (I had one of my hens go broody a few months back, but she quite half way through, so I decided to get a bator.

Lol Kelsey, your comment about moving back home made me laugh. I keep hoping my 19 year old daughter will move back home....she just told me this past week she wants to move to Eugene or Portland now

I just got used to her being out of the house and in Corvallis! lol

On another note, I am still waiting for my eggs from PA. I ship eggs east and it takes 2 days, 3 max. It has been 3 days now and I doubt they will be here till tomorrow. They are still in Portland

Just got back from town. I purchased a flashlight with 144 lumens? Strong enough for candling? How many lumens does everyone use? I'll try it on a few tonight.

That is a really good one...I think about the same as I have. I might have something in the 120 range. I can't remember lol. I do need to put new batteries in though. My eggs from Deb came and I can barely see in them with my flashlight.

Excited to be setting them tomorrow (they are sooooo cold so letting them set overnight) along with eggs from Raphael and Gino.

Wow! Big difference. I had another clear egg from my silkies, and another clear serama egg. I'm sure another serama egg is clear, but I'm leaving it, since its from my FAVORITE cockeral!!
Now hears a question? I saw definite movement in some, and on others, when I turned the egg, I could see the veins or something wiggle? Good or No? Now how do you tell which ones have bloodrings, or are quitters??

I seriously cannot even think about incubating until I make sure mine is working. I get really stressed out when I can't see what is inside the eggs. With that said...I need to either replace the batteries on mine or go buy a new one today. I can't see a thing in these eggs!

Just looked up the flashlight I borrowed from my dad online and it's 360 lumens lol... I have to be careful when I use it because it will seriously blind me for a few minutes. it's a tiny little thing, but boy does it put out some light! About the eggs... I'm still new to incubating but when my eggs quit the blood vessels disappeared, and all that was left was a dark blob and some pieces floating around it
