Right now I'm debating over local silkied serama eggs from show stock, or a silkied pullet from unknown stock at half the price of the eggs

I saw a cute silkied rooster that I was tempted to get, but without a mate that also has the silkied gene... No silkied babies!

Of course you could get them in second generation mating but that takes so long and involves line breeding. I don't mind breeding my hatchlings together but then bring in new blood for the next generation.

That's the other problem with just getting a pullet. No silkied babies til I got her a mate. I think my one chick from August may be a boy based on behavior, and constant squaring off against a chick I know is a boy but so far is showing zero comb develop

How many eggs did you pick up?

I'm glad your lone silkie will have a chick friend.

I brought home a dozen. I put some under my hen and this morning she is standing over my cold eggs. What the heck?! She pooped on them too! Thanks a lot. I put them back in the bator hoping they will be okay.

I think pooping on them is a not so subtle hint. Lol

she's not interested.

That is the irony... You always have extra boys until you actually need one, and then you get all girls.

I would anticipate having extra boys, but I can't count my chickens before they have hatched or before I can even candle my eggs!

You know what? I put her back in her coop and she ate and then settled down on her egg like nothing ever happened. So she is still broody, just not on my eggs, where I want her to be. I can't give her special eggs in there because they will more than likely be killed.

I do want to hand raise these babies anyway, but I was going to incubate her eggs and give them to her when my babies hatched. I always have to give her babies anyway because she can't keep the eggs alive. I don't think it is her fault, I think her rooster is over excited, but he is very pretty.

Have y'all set your eggs upright to hatch before? I didn't have luck with my last try at seramas eggs, so that's what I've done this time.
Any thoughts?

I would keep a close eye on them, especially for wrong end pipers or internal pipers that can't break the egg. Good luck, keep us posted.

That behavior is a pretty good indicator, usually the pullets just stare at them in confusion ; ). Is that chick silkied?
