Serious Bumble Foot

I just came out of a bad case of pneumonia and found out that a hen has serious bumble foot. I feel awful. I got the core out but her leg is hot. Penicillin? if so, how much in an injection and what size needles. We have had many cases, successful in all with minor surgery, but circumstances kept me from catching this case early. Any help on a Sunday would be greatly appreciated. Or, a portion of a penicillin tablet I have left over?

Procaine penicillin G can be purchased in the refrigerated medicines at most feedstores. You can use a 22 gauge 1/2 needle on a 3 ml syringe. Give 1/4 ml once a day for 4-5 days with a clean needle and syringe daily. Inject it 1/4 inch deep into a different side of the breast muscle daily. A vet might be considered since they have many more powerful antibiotics. You might try soaking her leg in warm Epsom salts daily.

Also address the cause of the infection. Get bird on dry ground will lesser amounts of feces and anything that might cause wounds to the feet.

Have her in a dog kennel in the garage and one infection kernel removed. Thank you so much!!! Wrapped with antibiotic, gauze and vet tape. Just afraid I caught it too late

while being ill myself!

Oh, thanks! I will. She's a sweet little mix that was sold as a silkie by mistake. We just kept her because she's a dear. Poor thing. Appreciate the oral drop idea.
