Hi My friend has an easter egger hen that has been struggling with a respiratory disease for 12 months now. It comes and goes with much time and effort put in with creams, antibiotics, tea baths to the eye, herbal remedies and hand feeding etc. This last bout was so bad that we removed a marble sized chunk of hard pus? from behind the inner eyelid. The best way to describe it would be it looked and felt a bit softer than a stale macadamia nut. I know...gross, but it gets worse. After antibiotic injections and removing this disgusting lump of whatever it was the swelling went down a little over time and the inner eyelid moved back to normal position but her eye has been left with what looks like a big wet scab over it. At the moment she is still being assisted to eat and having creams and bathing of the eye daily. Has anyone ever seen anything like this and any suggestions are most welcome.

Do you have a picture you can post of what the eye looked like after this chunk of junk was removed? She may have a corneal ulcer underneath that but a picture would help. I think I would stop putting anything in that eye other then antibiotic eye drops. To be honest, if this hen has struggled with whatever this disease is for so long I'd probably put her down. That eye has got to be extremely painful.

No we did not take a photo after we took the muck out but it was just a thin white film over the eye at first and that was about 4 weeks ago.
I agree it is probably time to say goodbye. I have told my friend to stop doing too much and only apply aloe vera once a day. and to put Apple cidar vinegar in her water. Thanks so much. I will research a little about corneal ulcers.

have just had a look at some pictures and i think you may be right about the corneal ulcer.
Thank you, I will pass this information on.
