Seriously, is there ever any way to get ahead?

I may be totally wrong, but I keep seeing that there are jobs available in this country. They are just not where they have been in the past. It seems that the next group of job seekers may need to move to different parts of the country. So I may see my kids leave the area in order to find jobs. At this point the west coast still has jobs. They just may not allow anyone to get ahead though.

I too would love to have a job. I just haven't figured out what I can do, given that I can't stand for very long, and I am in pain all the time. I also know that I move very slowly compared to most people, and I tend to miss details. I can't even type without heavy editing, even then I go back later and find that I have missed adding parts or whole words. So I am still wondering what kind of job that a person like myself could do.

Sure there are jobs available in this country...
Usually its 20 + applicants for 1 job though... not good odds.
And about moving... easier said than really done to leave your family/children/pets and family house behind.

I completely understand that it is much easier to point out that there are jobs out there somewhere, than it is to actually be able to get them. I can relate to not being able to pack it all up and leave so much behind for a job that may or may not work out. I think that it is the worst part of this economy. Moving can be a whole lot like playing Russian roulette. A person could move and still not get a job that would cover the basic necessities of life, and be stuck in a place that isn't home.

Wow, this thread took off.

We are in a depression folks, no doubt about it.

Prayers and positive thoughts for all of us....

... found out yesterday that my chairside assistant will be getting more tax money back than she paid in.

is that really possible????

Wow, I just read this entire thread. Guys, you have made me feel better because we are not alone! Hubby is a carpenter - in this economy that's a death sentence as far as jobs are concerned. He's been laid off more than he has worked for the last three years. He got laid off again January 3 and doesn't even qualify for unemployment because he didn't work long enough last year. I'm not real sure how we're going to get by this time.

On the plus side - we heat our home with wood. Someone on Craigslist always has free wood for the getting. Our local grocery strore has "marked down" meats that are nearing their "use by" dates. Whatever they mark down is what we eat. We waste nothing, and I have learned hundreds of ways to use leftovers! Our grocery bill is about $150 a month for the two of us and the dog. The chickens free range, so feeding costs are really low. We use two bags of flock raiser monthly for around 50 chickens. Oh, and we have a well, so don't have to pay for city water.

We have no credit and have not used a credit card in three years, but do have two car payments plus the house payment. If and when hubby gets a job, it is always in Tampa, which is 55 miles away, so we can't do without the cars.

Our lives have changed dramatically in the last three years but we are making it.

Deb - Do you have a hobby that you can turn into $$$? We started making bird toys for exotic birds. We started selling on eBay, a few at a time. Now we do trade shows in Florida and Georgia plus have a web site. It has made the difference for us and if this economy ever gets better, might just turn into a full-time job for us. So, if you sew, knit, crochet, are handy with a hammer and nails, or just about anything crafty, maybe you can turn that into some extra pocket cash.

on HLN yesterday they were saying that there are jobs.. BUT they dont pay as much so one person needs to hold 2 - 3 jobs just to make ends meet

Don't know if this would work for anyone here, but when I was just starting out, I took a job that few people were interested in doing. Turns out, it paid well, but you had to travel as a Migrant Nuclear Worker from job to job. I did that for over twenty years, and yes, it was tough on family life. But my kids are now grown up with higher education and good 40 hour jobs with benefits.

I loved the years I was "on the road" going from job to job, and would do it again if the situation required it.

I keep my cars until they literrally die on me. My last car was a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero and it had 220,000 miles on it. It started running hot and I took it to the shop to get it repaired. The mechanic "gently" and "nicely" told me that he could repair it but the cost of the repairs would be more than the actual cost of the car. He told me that I should save the money that he would charge me for the repairs and use it as a down payment for another car. He said that he would feel really bad charging me to repair my car being as though it had 220,000 miles on it. I was so hurt because I thought that I could get another 100,000 miles on the car.
