Service Animals Redefined...

2x Like my husband's mother, she really ruin it for the folks in the small town, they now tell folks they need to get a "badge" for their dogs or paperwork indicating that it is a service dog instead of people wanting to get attention.

I remember all too clearly the police and their K9s sniffing down the halls for drugs in our high school... no one gave a flying fart in space if someone was deathly allergic to something that shouldn't be in a school... all that mattered was sniffing out any drugs. Don't recall any issues cropping up, or at least not serious enough to remember over 10 years later, but it's an interesting point. Not just in a cafe, a blind person bringing dander in... but lots of other service animals and jobs in places dander isn't normally found...

I brought it up the allergies because even though our dogs are cleaner than other dogs it can be an issue for those with severe allergies. It can also be an issue for those with a severe phobia of dogs. I am not saying we should walk around asking everyone if they have an issue but if you notice someone running away and hiding (I have had this happen) or trying to avoid you then commmon courtesy says lag behind and keep your distance. I don't want to cause someone an anxiety aor anaphylactic reaction because I am at the store. That is as unfair as them trying to say we can't have service dogs.

I didn't bring this subject up to start a fight. I just have a tendancy to play devils advocate.

Don't feel bad I play devil's advocate a lot too.

It is a good point though.

BTW Is an An Anaphylactic reaction to dog dander common? I have dogs and cat and I'm allergic to them. I'm a two on a scale of 0 to 4 (so says my allergist. He made me promise not to let them sleep in my room.) *looks at her dog sleeping right by her bed right now* I am not telling the allergist if you don't

I have only seen it once in a VERY VERY severe allergy. The poor kid was only 6 or 7 I think and it was because I cam in with dog on my clothes. It can happen but its not the norm. Kinda like the poor girl I saw on tv once. She had chemical allergies so bad that she trained a dog to warn her about them. Unfortunately a paramedic threw her dog out of the ambulance and ruined its ability to do its job for her.

Good grief! What kind of psycho throws an animal out of a vehicle?!!? Life I'm right there with you... think you said it well. If your dog is helping you with your phobia, then it's not right at all for you to make someone suffer because of a dog phobia. Just common manners really. Well said. Do unto others and all that jazz.

The Dept of Justice doesn't consider an allergy to dogs or fear of dogs generally as a acceptable excuse for not allowing Service Dog in a place of business. http://www.ada.gov/svcabrs3.pdf Dog allergies tend to be breed dependent. Those that shed heavily are worse offenders than those who do not. My SD was with me for 7 years at a school in Charlotte and we didn't have a single problem with someone being allergic. We had a few that were afraid and I kept Spook away from them. Actually had one boy that over time, fell in love with Spook who had been originally terrified by her.

I had one that refused to allow Spook ride in the ambulence with me. He stated he would call Animal Control to come pick her up!

He doesn't work for the ambulance service anymore.
