Service Animals Redefined...

I am training my dog to be a hearing dog. She's a medium lab size (border collie/lab), and we haven't done the 'out in public' part yet. She's a super mellow, easy, friendly dog, so I don't anticipate any problems as far as behavior, and really, the skills are a lot of work already... but i was wondering if any of y'all had old dog vests or in training patches or anything like that, that you aren't using anymore... i'm looking to get some stuff, so when she's ready, we can go out. Thanks!

I ordered tags from these guys for our dog. http://www.servicedogtags.com/service_dog_tags_c.htm I am happy with them and when he is done training then I will order new ones. I like the fact they have the dogs name and picture on them. I am also using a doggie back pack that used to be another dogs hiking pack till we can afford to purchase his harness.

Sorry I still use all mine. On Ebay check out a seller named czarsk or Susydidit Designs. She makes patches and bandana's and is really good. She can make just about any thing you want.

For vests, I like seller alwaysgreendogs--- http://shop.ebay.com/alwaysgreendogs/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 I've bought these for 2 different dogs and they are great. I love the bright colors.

I always put baby wipes in my dogs vest. That way you can wiped down before you walk in. I tried shoes, but you get enough look and attention so shoes was not s good idea for us. He wore them though. I just used paw wax. That is what they use on sled doggies to protect the pads of the feet. Also protect from hot hot days.

I use MuttLuks in the summer if we are out walking on the blacktop, but other than that no. I do use mushers wax to keep the pads of both Katie & Icee in good shape. We've got hard packed clay and small rocks all through the yard. Katie actually hate her feet and toes touched, though she loves her legs massaged. Icee puts her paws in my hand and lets me rub each and every toe.

Oh Icee is another girl we rescued. Icee is 90% blind as well as deaf. We rescued her on SuperBowl Sunday from a living HE**. Took until yesterday for my husband to be able to take her for a walk as she was terrified of me, people in general actually.

I got my tags from this person. http://cgi.ebay.com/Service-Dog-ID-...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item7dbc6de21b She's a Service Dog user too. The ones I got have a hard plastic over like on some keychains

I love those! What about shoes. I don't know if my dog would wear shoes... it just seems so dirty in public, do dogs get diseases from walking around in all that junk, or am i just nuts?

If there was a puncture, and then continued walking around in that with no chance to clean up, then maybe. But pup paws are pretty sturdy and designed to survive in the wilds and all the cooties that means. Still I'd prolly do any protecting I could just 'cuz I'm a paranoid. That really is just a great question and so cool to see so many answers and options!

I have never heard of the wax. Where do you get it? I really don't like making them walk across parkinglots unprotected and he HATES the boots.

Wish us luck. We are going out on a training session in a small town restaurant. I have talked with the manager but... I have IN state law printed and in his pack just in case.
