Set 86 Eggs Tonight *FORTY-FOUR Hatched--Hatch Over *

What state are you in and is that house still for sale?

State? Physical location or mental state, LOL? I'm bleary eyed and exhausted in Georgia-that covers both, I think.

The house is still for sale, yep, just not pursuing it actively.

Ok, this was an odd hatch, at least in that bator #2. I have four BBS Rocks, one just hatched a few minutes ago drying off in the bator. There are five total chicks in the bator. They are not dry enough or my light isn't good enough to know if one of those other 4 is a BR or a BBS Rock. Sadly, I had at least 3 BRs in this last bunch with innards outside of the body, which seems to be why they weren't hatching, based on my past experience with this-we opened the egg and the chick was breathing and not chirping so didn't have a good feeling about it and we were right. It's almost always shipped eggs that have that issue. The BBS Rocks hatched on their own, just a day (or two, in this last case) late. It was cheeping to beat the band last night and pipped this morning, finally. And the NHs hatched clean and easy on their own as well. Could be the later hatchers were affected by cool spots in that bator and the ones with deformities were affected by shipping on top of that, but I can't say for sure.

Two BRs in the bator are having issues getting to their feet-one appears to have curled toes, but they could straighten out when it gets up more energy. Another can't seem to get one leg underneath it so it's behind it, but that could change. I've seen chicks that looked worse rally and be fine within 24 hours. One is running all over asking the others to play and one is shakily standing up, both of those having hatched completely on their own.

So, I think my total is 44, way more than enough to pick keepers from. I just need one BR cockerel and two or three pullets to get my BR numbers back and I have all these super interesting, super cute babies in breeds I never expected to have, as well!

I'll let you guys know the exact number of BBS and BR when these last few are completely fluffed out and I can tell black from blue.

Congrats on your hatch!

Hey, that's about half!

I just wish more BR had hatched! I was so looking forward to those.

Oh well. Enjoy your babies and post pics!

Final Totals, all Shipped Eggs:

Started With: Hatched:

10 BBS Rocks 4 *could be 5* (can't tell if one is barred or blue)
20 Barred Rock (Two sources) 9 *could be 8*
8 EE and/or Ameraucana 5 (one is an Olive Egger)
4 Silver Laced Wyandotte 3
5 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte 3
1 Olive Egger (Amer x BCM) 0
6 New Hampshires 4
14 Buff Orpingtons (Two sources) 9
12 Belgian D'Anvers 7

Out of the BBS Rocks, I know for sure I have 3 blue Rocks, 1 splash and 1 in the bator that is either splash or super light blue--it's still very damp. Then maybe there is one more if that one in question is a BBS rather than a BR.

I think I did say that half would give me plenty of babies, didn't I? 44 out of 80 is just over, but if I have to put down one of the ones with bad legs or both (hope not), I'll still have just over half, which is fine with me.

I want an Olive Egger Hen, how do I go about getting one of those or who do you suggest as a good breeder?

Well, in the end, you have accomplished your goal! You should have plenty of choices. I am hoping you hatched lots of pullets!

Yes, ma'am, I certainly did! Thank you so much for including all those extras in the other breeds. I so appreciate it!

And thanks to halo, hinkjc, Pine Grove and Boggy Bottom Bantams for the wonderful babies in my brooder, too. I'm blessed to have such generous pals on BYC, I truly am.

Just figured out that 3 of the BRs hatched, but 2 have leg issues. One will probably straighten out since it's the toes a bit curled, and I see that it is on occasion, putting its feet flat on the floor. The other one, a definite pullet, has a hock that is torqued inward and I'm afraid I'll have to put her down. Will give it a bit more time, but she was probably in a bad position in the egg. Not sure of the sex of the one with the curved toes yet since it's still a bit sticky on the head to see the spot. I think the first vigorous little BR nipper is a cockerel, but will let you know later when they are completely fluffed. They're receiving their cute little leg bands as they go in the brooder.

Of the BBS Rocks, I have 3 medium blues, 1 splash and one that is either very light blue or splash, will figure that out later.

On a side note, I'm worried about my dog today. She isn't doing well, seems lethargic and sad and won't eat. She's 13 1/2 so we may lose her soon. No more dogs after Kes is gone is the plan. She has been a sweetheart and such a good pal to my Cody, who passed away about three years ago.

Wynette could probably send you some eggs, or kathyinmo or halo. Or check the Olive Egger thread in breeds for others who have them.

Congratulations on your hatch!!

Sorry to hear about your dog.

I wanted to ask if you have pictures of your SLW chicks. I had some SLW eggs that I incubated but only one made it. They all had really poorly developed air cells, I'm thinking because they were shipped. But I saw some other pics of what someone said were SLW chicks and they don't look like mine. I'm kinda disappointed, I really wanted a hen, but it already acts like a roo.
